Hey guys,
Just bought an 04 Xterra XE V6 with almost 200k on it. I know, a lot of miles but I got an excellent price on it so if it needs some work i'll be fine with that. But I have a question from you guys who have been immersed in Xterra world for much longer than I. What kind of routine maintenance that's probably been skipped in the past would you all recommend that I do immediately. I would take it to Nissan and ask but then I'm sure I'd leave with just a printed out list of all the scheduled routine maintenance and a $1000 bill. So I figured you guys would know what things tend to go out soonest and what areas need special attention. So if you could provide me with a list of things to have replaced, flushed, checked, etc. that would be awesome. Also, do you guys recommend any certain oil, gas treatment, oil treatments, etc? thanks in advance.

#1 thing on the 3.3V6 is the timing belt.. It needs to be done every 105k. Along with that go's the Water pump belts and hoses.
Did you get any service papers with it? Sometimes shops will add a sticker under the hood or drivers door when they do the T-belts..
I would start switching fluids to a high miles type.. I run Mobil 1 High miles in mine.. Its 6 to 9 a quart but the added protection is worth it to me. Xterra takes 3.5 quarts of oil.. Buy a good oil filter too.. If you search the web you will see some reports on those.. Im a purolater guy (Or how ever you spell it) IS this 4WD? Im sure the front and rear differentials have never been serviced.. So like Royal purple gear oils.. I my self stick to Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear lube LS 75-90 The LS stands for (Limited slip) Which most Xterra's have in the rear. Could be time to drain the antifreeze too.. Most coolants do not last but 50k I believe.

Spark plugs, Wires and a distributor cap and button.. The plugs are a pain to do #6 plug is hard.. but can be done by some one with a little skill and patients.

Those are a few basic.. Timing belt can be done for 350 by your self (Skills needed or help) @ Nissan your looking 800 to 1400 Very time consuming.

Also take a look at the center link for wear, and the idler arm. If there is slop in the steering, that is the place to start.

Adding this here cause I don't know where else...

I see some folks talking about having to replace rear main seals, U-joints, head gasgets, bearings, ect... but not EVERYONE. Is it that others have changed them and not said or is it just the individual vehicle's have worn. This spring starts a major upgrade mode for me and if it might need changing in the near future, then I might as well do it then.

I have 121k on my 2002 and I have replaced the valve cover gaskets, I have a leaking seal on my rear axle, and I need to replace my oil pan gasket.
There is probably more that I need to do but that is all I can think of right now. So to answer your question I needed most of it, but I don't know if everyone has the same luck as me.

Common high mileage replacements include: u-joints, oil pan gaskets, differential seals, timing belt, water pump (may be more, but that's what popped into my head).

Other stuff to do: Flush coolant system, flush tranny and change filter, new gear oil in differential(s).

Check things like the shocks, ball joints, tie rods, and brakes to see if they need to be replaced.
