Keep in mind, this is only what I've read, and not what I've experienced personally.

I read it could be either the driver's side rear O2 sensor OR the driver's side rear catalytic converter, and that the cheaper and easier route is to throw an O2 sensor at it. Theoretically catalytic converters last the life of a vehicle, so it's not often that they go bad on their own.

Usually if they're going to go bad, it's because something else in the emissions system is messed up. I haven't read a better explanation than that, otherwise I'd elaborate for you...

O2 sensors can be had for pretty cheap and as long as you can remove the old one from the pipe, they're not bad to change. I didn't have any issue removing either of my rears. The fronts, however, were rust welded to the bungs so badly that the bungs turned out from the manifolds with the sensors still attached.

If it were me, I'd clear the code and drive on until it comes back; it could be a fluke.

The bung came out on one of my front O2 sensors as well. Keep the socket on the sensor or grab a 15/16" wrench for the sensor and a larger (if you have it) wrench or channel locks to hold the bung and start turning.

0420 / 0430 read as such:
Cat isn't warming up properly (fast enough). 1st cause listed is the cat proper, then it goes to exhaust leaks, air intake leaks, injector problems, bad plugs, and bad timing. Bad O2 sensor isn't listed as a culprit, as they should throw their own codes, but it could happen.

My usual fix in this case is to throw a CEL eliminator (either official or a drilled out spark plug non-fouler) on the rear sensor. If that doesn't work then it's probably the cat.

I know this is a gen one thing..
But gen2s fry cats like crazy ;)

That us all

I did not know that, but I did read about a lot more Gen 2 guys having problems with a P0430 than Gen 1/1.5's.

And there you have it.

I knew somebody would have a better answer, haha.

I dont know if this could be the culprit, but I adjusted what i believed to be the idle on the throttle body, and after that the X started acting wierd. On acceleration it would sometimes act like it shifts into neautral and shoot up to 4k rpm theeither catch back into gear, or drop sharply back down. This only happened on acceleration. And if i came to a complete stop, then the gas pedal would sometimes stick. Like i had to shove my foot down in order to make it move.

I just did this last Wednesday, and thought it was just adjusting to the new idle or something, and then the CEL came on yesterday, and I changed the idle back to normal.

Now i do have a major exhaust leak, but its on the passenger side, or at least thats where it sounds like its coming out of.
