Just got my 2000 Xterra. My father in law decided he wanted me to have it. So here's the thing. I don't know where to start. Because I'm broke as hell im thinking about lighting. Can't afford much right now. All my cash was spent coming to Michigan from my home in Florida. The X already has some cheap I lights on it. He wanted me to put them on for him before I got it. I'm wanting to go all LEDs all rectangular in their glory. Tell me you tho it's of where I should start and what you think.

PS I'm new to this. How do you upload pictures

Welcome. I use www.photobucket.com to upload pictures. When I upload a pic, I click on that picture, which will launch a new page. On the right of your picture on that new page is four bars, one says "email & IM", the one I use says "Direct". Just click on the address code to the right of "direct" and it will automatically copy.

Then on here, as you post, you'll see all the little buttons above the area you're typing in your post. You'll see a globe, an x'ed out globe, a square picture box, a film reel. I click the square picture box. Paste the copied "Direct" address in the window that pops up. Hit enter and you'll see your picture pop up in the same area that you're typing your post.

Hope that helps.

Paint ( Rhino Line too if ya want ) all plastics t include the roof rack
Remove factory step rails.
Remove rear sway bar
Remove plastic mud flaps
Black out wheels
Sticker it all up ( gives ya xtra horeses so I've heard )

Stickers also add weight reduction.

LOL

Its why you can eat all the donuts you want w/o gaining weight, the hole in the middle is the antidote for the outside....like having some anti-matter with your matter.

The free or almost free mods as mentioned are the best way to go if broke.

Also - Make sure you know if you need to be saving for maintenance items....such as if you are due at 105k miles for a new timing belt, water pump, etc. Does it need plugs or wires, filters, repacking of wheel bearings, front drive shaft greasing, etc?

Its not as much fun to have lots of lights on a rig that can't move, etc.

:D

After you are sure you have the $ to keep it running, etc...

..Think about what you want it to be able to do, that it can't now.

Your mods should have a path in your head...that all leads to a concept you want your X to be one day.

For example, if you think you might want larger tires than 32's one day, a body lift is something you can do yourself for ~ $100 or so....and that makes room for larger tires.

If you are going to off road, you'll want sliders...and, they work best if you get them to fit WITH the BL, as you then get slider that can reach up far enough to still protect you after the BL - IE: You'd get the BL first, so all the stuff you get will then be able to work with the BL, and avoid gaps, etc.,,,so sliders and bumper and larger tires = do BL before the other stuff.

If you do the BL first, you can also get the larger tires w/o waiting, etc...as that made tire room, and so forth.

A PML = 1.5" suspension lift, also less than $100, all you need are new shackles for the butt, and use the built-in adjusters to raise the front to match.

If planning on off roading, you might also want a CB for trail communication with your buddies. And recovery gear, etc.

And so forth.

Think about what kind of rig would make you happy, and then PLAN a path to get there. That avoids the typical rush to get gew gaws, and then find you want a different XYZ because the old XYZ looks dumb after the other changes, or you end up buying a different version of something twice instead of once, etc...

And, you don't blow your budget on a light bar, and later find you'd have rather gotten new shocks, etc.

Umm also somehow the background became pink. How do I fix that
On a real computer, click on FORUM ACTIONS at the top, then on General Settings

At the bottom of the page, you'll see Forum Skin. It's probably on XN-G. Switch that to another option and have fun.

He's just kidding, the forum automatically senses your orientation, and chooses an appropriate skin color.

So here's a possible dumb question. Do they make a 4" suspension lift for it. I've only found 2.5 and 3 inch. I want to put 35s on it. Also to add another possible dumb question what is the resignator. I've read a lot of people saying they removed it. I do also want to put manual lockers on it

35's have been done but its not for the weak hearted.. You will need a 2" Bodylift, 3" SL and a cutting blade..

Also you will need to upgrade the steering too..

Most end up SAS (Straight axle Swap) for that and depending on how you do that your 1500-5k

I guess that makes sense. My Toyota had a straight axle so I never had any issues. What axle would work. And would I have to do a lot of fab work or is it like an 80s model f150.

the hardest thing is making the plan,if your true goal is to run a 37 inch tire with a solid front axle, hen don;'t spend the money on ARB for the front and rear for what you have. You will only be spending that money again when you do the swap. And by swap in am refering to the corp 14 that you will want for the back, much stronger, cheaper gearing options and a bunch of locker options. That will have 8 lugs in the back so you would want to run chevy outers in 8 lug up front.

But if you want to run 35's it is a different situation all together,

Ok so I'm an idiot. I thought no one replied lol just realized I had to turn the page. Anyways what would you recommend. I have already decided I'm getting revolvers. I wonder if I can achieve a lot of travel somehow with ifs on 33s

With IFS and just new UCA, you can get ~ 9" of front wheel travel.

That's roughly the same as a stock Jeep Wrangler with connected front sway bar and a live axle.

If you replaced the UCA and LCA with long travel IFS parts, you can get more than that, but, I know no one personally enough to measure their travel....so I don't know HOW MUCH more.

In pics, it looks to be at least a few more inches.

Rear travel is not too hard to do, its the front that's $$$$.

:D

This is an example of the rig still being pretty level with the 4 tires all at different altitudes...the front travel is not maxed here, but, its close to maxed, for perspective.

How much $$$$ are we talking about. I moved too and left all my equipment so I'll need to pay a shop

If you just need new UCA, ~ $400-ish?

http://www.4x4parts.com/i-18981139-xterra-front-suspension-lift.html

If you SAS, by the time you're done with all the "while your at it stuff", that would be closer to $ 4 - 12k depending on the level of crazy you went.

For most X bolt on type stuff, literally, all you need is a metric socket and wrench set....and not even that many sizes of them. I think a $100 bill would cover every tool you might need if you don't go in the snap on van, etc. Some PB Blaster, lubes, jack stands, etc...and you're good to go.

That gets the BL, up to 3" SL, etc.

Thanks for the info. So ummm WHAT IS UCA, SAS ect. Sorry for being a dummy with all this. :lols:

UCA = Upper Control Arm

LCA = Lower Control Arm

SAS = Solid Axle Swap (Remove the entire IFS [independent front suspension] and replace it with a live axle [which is the type you have in the rear already].
