So, for my birthday my dad is giving me five grand to buy myself a DD because hes tiredof hearing me complain about Ivans horrible gas mileage.

Now, I'm asking you, Xterranation, to help me find something that looks sporty, and is good on gas. You dont have to find me exact cars, just body styles and years of cars that are reliable, yet not grandma looking.

Thanks in advance!

Like Dave said, Honda civics and accords about any year, any miles will be a great dd the biggest thing is try and get something you don't want to modify... Then you can pour more money into the xterra lol... Seriously though having to vehichle a you want to mod sucks...

I keep glancing at celicas, mr2's and all years of 240sx. But, finding clean unmolested ones is getting tough. I figure if I'm going to own two vehicles they will be polar opposites. One a clumsy slow 4x4 that can haul then other a sleek fast 2 seater. A manual gearbox is a requirement for me. The Sentra SE-R spec v is a good option. Enough motor to have a edge but not a sports car I'll toss money at. Having borrowed a economy car last year while my x was in repair I really didn't like that segment of car. No personality no power and despite it being in good shape everyone viewed it like a junker.

Of course another option is 2wd trucks. Something like s10 or maybe frontier. They get decent mpg yet have a bed which makes them versatile.

x2 on an a 2wd truck. Maybe a hardbody or like silverdude said an s-10. I had a 4 banger hardbody 5 spd. It got pretty decent mpg's maybe 20ish+ depending when I wasn't being Tony Stewart.

Agreed. That's what I'm doing. Currently looking for a 2003 Volvo S60 AWD.

Also Steve you suck. Your dad threw 5K at you just so you'd quit complaining?! All my dad ever threw at me was a shovel, followed by "Get to work."

For real.. And 2 seater? How about a bike? That's my next option. I'm not thinking crotch rocket, I want something that will be comfortable to ride for long trips. The bike that Aaron rides on Gas Monkey Garage is exactly what I want. I would like to add a sissy bar to the back to strap luggage to, so I can go on long treks

Exactly Mac! I'm trying to get something around 100k or under 100k miles. And around 30-35 miles per. That way I can have it for a good amount of years if taken care of.

And it's going to be hard not to mod it. I may have to at least bring out a few paint cans or so.

I've seen a few pretty nice accords anything more sportier though? And I also agree with you Silver Dude, definitely want polar opposites for cars.

And Brian, here you go.

Having owned a few small trucks (hardbody & s10) idk that I would go that route... I've never met a hardbody guy who gets better then 24 mpg... Even then to get that there trying real hard to get there... They also have timing chain guide failure... My 1989 s10 wasn't bad... 26 mpg... But that was the throttle body injection 2.5l with a whopping 90hp lol.. Mac makes a good point get something that gets 30+mpg...

I'd look for a Golf. You probably won't get a GTi for five grand, but a regular Golf is still a fun car. So are all generations of the Ford Focus. And like others said, you can't go wrong with a Civic.

Haha - exactly. Instead of having one nice car as a DD, I alternate between a built Xterra and a two-seater Honda...

Passats and Jettas are nice until they get to high mileage, and then stupid things start breaking. If I'm buying a car with 100k miles on it, I'd go honda or toyota over volks all day long.

1997 Jett's cost me a extra 1500-2k a year to own.. Was a fun car but not worth all the issues.. Buddy of mine that works for Volkswagen told me to keep away.. That meant a lot to me.. So I have..

I bought a jetta fort ex and that car was nothing but problems. Had it chwcked out by a vw mechanic (my uncle) no issues and once I bought it, it was nothing but problems. Loved driving it though, that vr6 had lots of power... I swore off vw's after that.

Alright, finally found a car. I was mainly looking for something that has already had work done to it, that way i'd be less inclined to making that my top priority over Ivan. So, welcome in my 2002 Nissan Maxima. Decked out in Nismo, GReddy and Stillen, this car is a FREAKING BOSS. Clocked in at 367 horses right now by a local shop that has a dynamometer. Its a fun car. :)

I have NO idea yet. I've seen the previous owner driving it around like early march. Then I happen to find it at this car lot and found out he had just traded it in on a newer Infiniti. I just picked it up today, and went to the shop to see how much power it had and havent had the time to take it apart to actually see what makes the large improvement.

Looks sweet, I'm guessing its had an entire engine rebuild to pull out that much power, I mean that's over 100 more hp then stock... Unless it has rear mounted turbos or something

No no turbo. But this exhuast.. It's probably one of the best exhuasts i've ever heard. (And i'm not into the whole ricer/tuner type cars but this one sounds clean and mean.)

Yeah, its about 120ish more hp. I'll take it apart this weekend and see whats up with it. Lets just say I can go 95 in second gear. :)

Yeah, the crack was the first and last thing I noticed that was wrong with it, which doesnt matter me much, cause i plan on getting a new lip anyways.

I got it for 5500 out the door. I've become well known buddies of the son of the dealership owner, and as soon as I mentioned his sons name, he dropped the price from the original 6200.(Which is what I was hoping for and why i went there in the first place :) ) It was an absolute steal. The inside is impeccable and very roomy.
