Thanks guys!

The rust isn't bad, it's a bit of a battle, but should be able to win it if I keep at it....it's not too bad...

Oh, and a new side project / parts truck!

On Saturday with the help of my dad, best friend, another friend, and an acetylene torch, we stripped part of the Frontier down. The unfortunate part is that my dad caught the drivers side tail light harness on fire, and with that, the tail light itself, so I'll need to replace that.

I'm keeping the box, suspension, rear axle, gas tank, underbody spare tire carrier to make an off-road camping/expedition trailer.

What's compatible with the X up front I'll keep, but the motor has 350'000kms on it, and it's auto while my truck is stick, but I'll keep the motor to do some mock-ups with.

The rest that's Frontier-specific or that I don't need I'll sell, like the exhaust and DT headers.

Thanks! I've made a Facebook page called "Frontrailer" I'll have ALL the pics of the process. I'll be learning to weld on this for sure. It's got a lot of details I haven't' posted yet, like linear actuators to raise the cover, an Arduino for control and monitoring to the CarPC (which needs to get back up and running) through WiFI, and a thing or two I'm not going to reveal yet until I get something started to show and test, so it isn't as simple as just a truck box as a trailer, it'll be more than that ;)

It's been a crazy week. I had to strip down what I'm keeping from the rest of the Frontier since it's in my grandmother's garage, and her house will probably be for sale to pay for her to go into a good home since she's damaged her spine and lost feeling and strength in her legs. I needed to do this for my March break since I'm living about 1000km away, it's not easy or convinient for me to deal with it. I also had to get the trailer part in a rolling condition, ready for the 1000km trip back from Niagara to Quebec City.

There's plenty more pics, but they're on my girlfriend's camera

There's still plenty to do, like replace the floor, make a front box, mount the fuel tank, pthe racking to probably support the OEM rack and an RTT and the actuators to lift the top, batteries, but to get her rolling was the hardest and most important part.

Oh, and coming back form Quebec, being 4 people in the truck, I figured it was needed to quiet down the exhaust. She was pretty loud and drony, and not easy to talk, especially when we were 4 for the 1000km drive down, and figured towing a trailer on the way back it would be worse, so she went in, and now running dual mufflers! Don't laugh, it works great, easier to place than a resonator, and less restrictions.

Thanks! Actually it's more irony than planned that way, but of course, the end product would of just been painted yellow. At least this way it matches even while I'm working on it.

It was buddy's truck, here a pic of us back in 2008. Me in my stock Xterra up front, and him and his Frontier in the back.
1901718_1517944601792882_3438071593168348733_n.jpg

I've actually had this idea for many years, the hard time was finding a truck in the style that I wanted where I could afford it. I bought this truck, non-running with 350'000kms on it for $1000. I was looking on the net all summer last year for one, most where rusted to bits, really unusable, older (1998-ish) with the style that I didn't want, and most were listed for around $2500-$3000. There was a a blown engine S/C Frontier for $500, but it was too far and was sold the same day. There was even one that looked great, even mint, but was asking $8000. For $1000 and only needing to replace the front and floor of the box, it's an easy fix. The rest of the box is in good shape with a small dent to take care of and some surface rust here and there, but she'll all get repainted when the fab and repair is done. The rust on the front and floor of the box were more likely attributed to the plastic bed liner.

I've got the idea after a few years with the RTT, where it would be nice to park it; as a single guy, it's not big deal, but with having a girlfriend (2 years this month), althought she likes camping, she always needs this and that and the truck needs to be mobile, so the RTT on the roof of the truck is inconvinient, but I still want to camp, so that's where I started to look last year into trying to get that idea started.

Funny cause I had always based my idea on my buddy's truck. Of course with it being yellow, but I liked the short box better, but also the solid tonneau cover to keep everything away from the elements and secure, and a base for mounting the OEM roof rack, with to me surprise fit perfectly. I'm also very surprised on how solid the tonneau cover is, it probably could hold the tent and us in it, but there will be crossbars underneath to make sure it's solid.

Next step is to redo the floor then to get racking and the actuators in. Then the factory fuel tank will be put in and probably at the same time she'll get shocks in the same inboard configuaration as the X, and also equipe it with revolver shackles. I've heard the Gen2 X revolvers give more lift over the Gen1's, so I'll probably go that route too see. She needs a tad more suspension lift, and the front leaf hangers may have to be extended down.

Thanks!
We`ll it`s been a long while since I`ve posted here, so since I have the time, I`ll bring this up to date and you guys up to speed.

Back in April, I went to get my MTR's switched on to my new powdercoated Desert Runner rims, but the shop tore a bead (and broke the machine) on the first tire they went to remove. With that, I would need to replace the matching tire on the same axle, but at that point, I might as well replace all 4 and go with 33's, and the trailer will get the 32's. That being said, I can't legally drive the truck since she's got studded winter tires and aren't allowed after April 15th, and MTR kelvars in 32's or 33's were listed as back ordered everywhere until the end of May....so I took advantage of the time to get work work done on the truck.
With that, the main job is a new lower rad support
zP4O0Go.jpg

oN2pDGp.jpg

Next step was the power steering pump, which now is super easy to access (even moreso then with a body lift). I had a broked headlight bulb retaining ring that I replaced while removing the headligts. A new (proper I`d say, but the MT truck may come with the N/A rad) Supercharged radiator is waiting to go in after. I was deciding if I replace the flex line to the clutch slave and the remaining OEM line that it's attached to that wasn't replaced, but it was a 3 week backorder on that part. I also wanted to get back to working on the trailer since I need it camping-usable for mid July (ALMS @ Mosport). Of course the main goal is to get it to the CNTC Adventure Weekend, but she definitely won't be complete by then.

The truck progressed well, but since i pulled a bunch of muscles in my back that week, decided to take it easy, which wasn't a problem since most of the hard work was done last week, so it was mostly just prepping the parts and truck. Removed some rust on the truck as well, coated it all in 3 coats of POR-15, then it's to coat it in that marvelous Corrostop Yellow
HkVkoDV.jpg

vOi0ywU.jpg

And the big update: At the end of May, I was in a rush to put the truck back together AND the trailer got into a usable state with only a 2 week notice that I was going to be spending the summer in Kingston, Ontario and had to leavet on the Frontier's tires, waiting for my MTR to arrive in July. While I Kingston, I couldn't too much, but replaced the master cylinder, and went to KalTire to get the torsion bars cranked since it seamed like the front end was sagging, only to get a bunch of excuses about the teeth stripping on the torsion bars, and rust, bla bla bla...order some from the US in panic and decide to wait until after AW to arrange to get the truck done by my trusted mechanic down in Niagara. Also come July, found out that the MTR's have been pushed back to September, too late for AW, and then decided to add a 5th tire to the order. The girlfriend trained down to Kingston, I packed up the truck and trailer and headed to AW, and had a blast, but would of liked to of had more time to chat with friends.
Coming back from AW, I was following FyrTwr through Barrie to avoid the dreaded 400 long weekend traffic, when my rear U-joint let out at a light. Jon towed me to a nearby street and I looked at the truck and the situation. CAA couldn't do anything, having a trailer, I would need their RV service (new to me), and although I had MANY offers for people to come help with a tow (and with that VERY flattered for all my friends willing to help), I decided to devise a solution to drive back on my own power. After searching the local stores for a tin can of the sort, I went through my camping kit and used a cooking pot, some vice grips and tie wraps (to catch the vice grips if they came off) so hold the slip yoke in the transfer case to keep my fluid, while I drive 225km in front wheel drive, while towing a trailer. Took the 407 to avoid stop and go traffic to keep my CV joints happy, and with a stop in St Catherines after I started to smell some wheel bearing grease when we got on the 406, we successfully make it home.
lWWygjM.jpg

Being back at my parents, the truck was dropped off at my mechanic to deal with the torsion bars, and replace the wheel bearings since I'm sure they weren't happy from the trip. In the end, the BS about the torsion bar anchors teeth skipping (as all my CNTC friends told me wasn't likely) wasn't, and it was actually my LCA's cracking and bending. This is apparently caused by the Rancho 9000's set to max stiffness, and I'm not the first reported case of this problem. I also needed a new tie rod, and my SLR UCA's bushings were worn that he wouldn't be able to align it and ordered them in priority from 4x4parts and shipped them and to a US address for faster delivery and acquisition, and my idler arm was also worn and needed to be replaced. And now my front end is new and solid for what would becoming close to the cost of a SAS swap I figure....but with 1000km away from home, it's not the time or the place to seal with that, unfortunately. Realistically, I would of had to drive the truck like that until spring to be able to do that (or pay a shop to do it), which just isn't feasible.
GW0dhau.jpg

q1XaUVO.jpg

Oh, and my MTR's FINALLY arrived in November, but since they're not homologated for winter use in Quebec, they have to wait until spring to get installed. They're currently stored at the shop that ordered them for me. I will say I'm anxious to have them and have the X finally on 33's!
Came back for 2 weeks and was off for Portugal for a month. After coming back, the truck stayed in Quebec while we took her car to save on fuel for the trip back down to Niagara for Christmas.
Being back in Quebec, and some significant vacation to go, but no money since it's been an expensive few months, I decided to do another project since I'll need it come spring. And the plus side is that it'll barely cost me anything since I figure I have enough metal floating around from the trailer to get it started, if not finish it; My level fold-down receiver mounted spare tire carrier. Why work on this, and why this type of tire carrier? With waiting 8 MONTHS for tires, I figured it would be a good, if not, a smart idea to order a 5th tires as a spare, you know, if it happens again. And since the trailer is parked for the winter, I've got time between not and spring to work on a few side projects. And why this style? It's another idea I've had for a while, and it's in part the reason for the receiver in my rear bumper. I wanted primarily a tire carrier that would be receiver mounted so that I could remove it, and also move it to the trailer while towing the trailer.
Here's actually part of the design sketch I did back in early 2014, with the plans handed in with the intention of getting a fab shop to make it for me.
7bP3p3H.jpg

But honestly, I started to get afraid that this would end up being stupid expensive to get made. But with the trailer project and having bought a welder and learned how to weld, I figured this is something that's worth giving a try and that I could build it for a fraction of the price. I was honestly worried that the thing would cost me between $500 to $1000, so worth a try to make it myself. With the trailer parked for the spring, this is a good in-between project, and worked out well since I'll need the tire carrier come spring.
With a tire carrier blocking the hatch, it of course needs to move out of the way so I can access it. I didn't want what I've seen at some that fold down directly, which is fine for accessing the hatch, but not practical to actually remove the spare having no access to the nuts since their on the bottom; which would be a joy in mud or snow I would suspect, and even more fun trying to bolt it back up. That or you could lift a 100lb the tire like you guys do with your regular bumper tire carriers, but why not make things easier? There's a side swinging one that I came across several months ago, but I'd prefer to have it fold back then sideways.
A few weeks ago I started the section that goes into the receiver and started on the tubing. The Outter (2.25") tubing was actually notched wrong, and I had to cut that entire side right out.
s0lr2K1.jpg

Then the following weekend, worked on fitting and modifying the tubing (and some tweaking of the lower point/pivot points). This is it while in the up position.
oatWRzr.jpg

And in it's lowered position.
XUlUsTJ.jpg

If you look at the top bolts, you can see when it's in its vertical(up) position, the tire would have a slight angle back, while in the horizontal (down) position, it leveles out.
At this point, I haven't made the upper pivot/tire mount yet, and I want to get the mechanics working first. I'll then work on making it fit for a 33" tire. I couldn't really go much more at this point that weekend since I didn't have the truck with me to fit and measure. It was actually tilted a bit too much when up, and I needed the truck to confirm that.
This past weekend, I again worked on my tires carrier this weekend. Progressing well I`d like to say since I`m making, measuring and adjusting as I go
D28TM9I.jpg

YgoQBfG.jpg

IHqHZKB.jpg

It`s maybe 75%-80% there, not including paint. I need to get the right hardware to take out the slack out of the movement, and a friend suggested to use nylon washers. I also want to get a spring loaded pin to hold it in the up position, but so far I`m pleased with it.

I'm super glad to see you're still alive and kicking!

Indeed! Was just a crazy year! I've also got hands on a supercharger and plenum for cheap in a part out, and hopefully I'll take the blown motor that my buddy will be taking out of his. I'll get them off of him when he's done with he swap. He wanted to take the injectors out himself since they're apparently picky with that, but no rush for me, and I'll have to make the trek to pick them up, but with those parts, I'll finally have something to work with and get the measurements/mockup to get my intercooler made up!

Worked on the truck a bit this weekend. I had to re-replace the power steering pump that I replaced 2-3 weeks ago. I'm not sure what happened, but the shaft on the PS pump is all worn. I only found out after leaving the mother-in-laws after the heat gauge shot up. I'll have to find the receipt and see if they'll warranty it. I'll grab a pic of it and post it up before I warranty it. I have another Napa pump I'll warranty if they don't take that one, and bring that one back for my core charge at the wreckers. I had to get a wrecker pump since the pulley was also shot...the spines were non-existent. I'm really contemplating trying an electric pump, but an Astra electric hydraulic pump, or any electric-hydraulic pump that doesn't need an external controller (Toyota MR2), may be to be hard to find...
Anyway, since I had some extra time, I worked on the spare tire carrier. I think I've read somewhere, a saying, that you'll spend 80% of your time doing the last 20% of the work, and I'd say this is right. I'm working on cleaning up some of the imperfections, had to work on some realignment using the proper bolts I got for it, as well as, for the 3rd time, making the actual part that the tire mounts to. I need to do some extra support welding on the inside of the hub and drill and bolt the hub to the arm. I do want to make this adjustable for different tires..easy enough to finish off next time around. I'll put off getting more finishing work and paint until I get a 33" tire put on to make sure everything is okeyday before putting some finishing touches. OK, maybe a quick coat of paint to avoid any access rust that I'll just have to deal with later.
KbfO2Ad.jpg

The extra tubbing on the inside was just to keep it centered. A 2" OD square tubing *just* clears the inside of the hub

Nice!! Any plans to mass produce? :lolz:

I'm not going to lie about it and I'll say that I have indeed, but realistically I've only been welding for a year, so I'm not confident in selling my creations in terms of quality of my inexperience work, time vs profitability, time vs happy customer product turn around. The main thing is that I love have ideas and love making stuff, but the problem is that there gets to a point that I don't have the tools or experience to build the stuff that's in my head. The problem is that for people, my ideas are out there. They look at me like there's something wrong with me and/or my idea is too complicated and/or it's just not doable. This gets frustrating, so out of frustration and drive, I learn to do it myself, cause to me, it's absolutely possible.

The idea came just out my own want as an end result. I always wanted a hitch mounted tire carrier. I think it stems back to a 4Runner I say back when I was living in Virginia. I found it nice and clean. I also like that I could easily remove it and not lug it around for no reason. I also like the fold down idea cause it makes getting access to the spare easier because it's on the ground, but other then the rear stinger style ones you see on Jeeps (which has been done once in an Xterra), accessing the tire on the CBI carrier (which I drooled over for years) would be only doable in the up position. I wanted all these things, but despite all my research, it didn't exist.
So in the end, it was to fulfill my own need and curiosity, push experience and knowledge through trial and error, and prove the naysayers wrong there a computer geek can come up with stuff and make it work. You never know, I may find it annoying, and it may or may not need a hydraulic cylinder to give it a hand to make it more user friendly. Once I can give my honest opinion on it, post up some videos of it, and there's interest in it, I'll go to my local fab shop with my "prototype" and see if they're interested in reproducing it. They'll have the experience and tools that can make it faster, better and more economically and in volume. They technically already know about it with the drawings I gave them about it 2 years ago, and they seemed really interested in it for it's universal application, but it never materialized. I do have to have this in use on my truck in a form in the next 2-3 weeks when I pick up my 33's, cause I have a matching spare, and from there I'm sure I'll me making some mods and tweaks when it gets some real use.

Don't hold your breath, but I'll be posting updates as I have them, and hopefully sometime in the next few months, I'll have information about a production version.

I got pissed off today since I've got a PS leak somewhere, maybe it's one of the hoses. I've been searching for an alternative to replacing these pumps every year, and even more so that if the pump goes and I lose the belt/pulley, the truck had no cooling. I've talked with my cousin too over the last few years about trying to find a smaller pulley to drive the pump faster for better low-speed performance. So in my frustration, and having sold some old Mx-3 parts recently so I have some Paypal cash, I found picked up an Electric-Hydraulic GM Astra/Vauxaull Mk5 power steering pump for a good price off of eBay.

My pump came in surprisingly quick! I had a tag for a package and thought it was my LED's. Good timing too cause today Napa didn't/doesn't want to rewarranty my warrantied pumps anymore.

Sadly I haven't had time. The pump is actually quite large and I have no idea where to put it. Time has been so scarse that I caved in and bought another Napa pump last week and will be picking it up today. I wanted a Nissan one, but at C$400 vs C$110 for the Napa pump, I'll just replace the pump in the meantime. I've been trying to get the trailer ready to use it this weekend, which will probably just Friday night since I'm on standby to go to somewhere in Maryland on a USA-Canada communications course next week and the flight is Sunday 5am, but there's issues with my DND passport and embassy approval...nothing I did or can deal with; so it's out of my hands and wouldn't be surprised to get a notice late Friday afternoon.

I spent 3 hours fighting with the trailer with a tap that snapped off DEEP inside the upper actuator mount, and I ran out of time trying to get it out. I'll try new drill bits tonight, but that's the main issue I have to be able to get the trailer rolling with the tent.

Oh man. I am doing this and got a pump from a old mr2 that was used in a race car. It already has the controller and everything. It's just plug it into a power supply and plug the hoses into it and I'm good to go.

I tried looking for an Mr2 pump, but I couldn't find one, they're out of stock everywhere I checked. I'd swap to that setup if it's smaller and installable in our engine bay.

Good thing about an electric pump is that I can stick it wherever I have room. If I have to I can put it inside my bumper. Lol

On Friday I pinned up the trailer for the last time to bring her to get stored for the winter Along the way, I figured it was time to get it weighed, to stopped at a scale station that was en route.
I weighed both, then unpinned the trailer and ran just the truck on the scales.

Just the truck:
GOJ1n8H.jpg

Which puts the truck at 2600kg, or 5735lbs for you non-metric people

That evening, I took advantage of the mother-in-laws garage to clean up the disaster that was inside the truck from the craziness that is the haunted house, and it was cold and very friggin' windy, and it also gets dark at 4:30pm (stupid DST), so I could take my time and empty all the junk out and reorganize it.

I also wanted to install my new 24" LED bar up front, which went well and was fairly straight forward. It's on the same switch at the 42" for the time being, which means I should get my butt in gear to get my switch panel made before I get more lights installed. I've got my roof basket in the works, so once that's done, more lights will definitely follow.
CfFdUfB.jpg

Since I had plenty of time, and since the spare tire spent it's summer on the trailer and I moved it back to the truck, I decided to look again at running the wires for the brake light on the carrier. My planned route back in spring pinched the wires, so I had ran out of time for that and put it to the side. Looking at it with a fresh mind, I drilled a few holes and took another path which so far works well.
BOrjpv2.jpg

Now that that's done, I'm looking at seeing about making a production version. I've been dealing with a new fabricator this year and so far I like his work and his prices, and he's got a machinist that can do a few extra fancy things, so when he comes back at the end of the month, I'll be talking with him and seeing what he can do. In the mean time, since I'm getting back into my own time and routine with the haunted house finally all torn down as of Saturday, I'll see about making up the bike rack adapter for it before seeing the fab guy.

also, I haven't worked much on the electric power steering pump, but I did finish up the brackets and painted them. Next step is that I need to get a hose made up, which isn't long, but the issue is working on the truck and puttering with that mod while not having another car. I'll need probably a few days to sort it out with belt and stuff, but the Rx-8 is done for the season as of last weekend, and there's the weekend, but it's cold outside, and not everything is open and available, and if something happens, if I do it at the mother in laws, it would be a pain to get a ride back home, since they're about 45min away...so I'm a bit stick between a rock and a hard place to work on progressing on that. I may wait until Xmas vacation to work on that. I could while down visiting my parents, but I really doubt my dad would lose power steering fluid all over this garage floor or driveway. We'll see, but maybe I'll take a few days near the end when I'm back in Quebec to use the mother-in-laws garage with no stress of work, and do it during the week.
