How to know if the steering box needs replaced?

I've had the classic steering box leak for years and until now have had no problems. It all started after a wheeling trip that got my engine bay extremely muddy. My power steering belt would squeal if I had to turn my wheels while standing still or at very low speeds. The squeal rarely happens now but it feels like my steering is getting tighter. Normally when turning if you let go of the steering wheel the front wheels naturally want to straighten out and return to a straight line. However, if I am turning and I let go the wheel does not correct to going straight and instead stays on course until I steer back to center. I hope that makes sense. Any ideas y'all?

Ask the dealer for a price quote. They quoted me $2500 (in for other inspection)...that answered it for me...nope, it doesn't need replaced.

:)

I basically determined that unless I am leaving puddles of power steering fluid in my garage, I should be OK. The fluid level stays where it is after I added some Lucas Stop Leak...No issues since.

Check your fluid leaks and then check the consistency of the fluid in the reservoir. Usually, a box that goes bad usually has more difficulty steering, especially at a stop. I had that problem on both my '00 X and my 02' TJ. I can see you have a Gen1 X. I've swapped two steering boxes now and its pretty easy. Just make sure its actually the box before you drop it.

Chuck, I'm having the same issue. I got a "new" box from a scrapped X, so I'm really hoping that will fix it. For a while...

I'll be following closely for the same advice :)

I was chatting with Nox yesterday and it is quite possible it is a failing power steering pump. It is cheaper than a new steering box but I'm guessing a much dirtier job.
