HELP! Rear dif gasket

So...can anyone tell me why my 2000 rear diff has an 11-bolt cover/gasket and Nissan shows an 8 bolt for the four-cylinder and 10 bolt for the 6? Is it because mine has an LSD?

I'm in a pickle here...trying to knit my dif back up and can't find a gasket. Considering just going to NAPA and getting some of that "Right Stuff" quick-set silicone, but I'd rather put an actual gasket...

Anyone????

This is the one you want:

Maybe try having them look up the 38320 part number. Courtesy can probably get it to you as fast as the dealer can. Can you grab one for me while you're at it? We can split the shipping cost.

Actually, as it turns out, that's not the one for my rig. Apparently my MT, LSD, pre-2000 Xterra has a different one. It's 38320-21G02. What a nightmare.

That's the same part. The second part of the number (after the dash)doesn't change the specs of the part, it's some kind of application reference number. LSD/MT/pre-2000 shouldn't make a difference.

You would think, but it's not the case. That is a 10-bolt rear diff cover. Do me a favor and count your bolts on your rear diff when you get home. Also, that number is the wrong number also. Idiots at Melloy Nissan gave me the front diff gasket number. The correct part number is 38320-T3322. It is a $30 special order. The part you linked me to is about four bucks, and can be acquired just about anywhere as an aftermarket, also. My best guess is the models with LSD had the bigger pumpkin.

When I did my locker I used the gasket maker silicone. The gray stuff. Same stuff used by nissan to seal all of the cases in the transmission and front diff. Hasn't leaked a drop.

So just to be clear, you used the silicone INSTEAD of a gasket? Or did you use it in addition to putting the old one back in?

My LSD diff has 11 bolts.

Not sure which gasket they ordered for you but it shouldn't cost $30, I'll bet that includes the "Melloy markup" I was telling you about. the LSD/bigger pumpkin sounds reasonable but all of the parts indexes that I can find list the 38320 as the gasket for both diffs. Did they give you a part number when they ordered it for you?

Also, if the gasket is the right one and you decide to go the Permatex gasket route, I'll give you the cash you paid at the dealership (if you want).

Yeah, gonna make that call tomorrow. If I do, you have a gasket coming...no charge. call it a shackle bonus and/or thanks for the bearings.

38320-T3322 is what comes up in FAST (the actual nissan parts program) for all HB233 rear ends, it lists for $2.60. Courtesy's site does not list the full part numbers, the first half of what they list as a part number is the parts code (IE what type of part it is, same for all chassis and the second half is just some junk they make up) they have always done this.

That being said I'd just use some ultra grey as well.

Yeah figured it out finally. Thrown off by napa and the rest showing a gasket for a 10bolt dif for my rig. Of course didn't think to check until I unpacked it to make sure what was inthe box was what I needed. The 38320 doesn't even reference at napa or the others, and my local stealer was just as clueless. Permatex it is. Don't have three days to wait.

Thanks for the input everyone...
