Oh bummer!
Sad to see an X-er leave the family....

Then again, the fiat did do some off-roading when it was out here (snicker).

What's this do the "mature thing" you're talking about???? (confused).

I'm in the 50+ range now, and I still haven't figured it out....

Have a good one, Mel :)

At first I was really bummed when I read about this on fb. I couldn't bring myself to like the post because I didn't like it, but the more I thought about it the more I respected your decision not as the mature thing to do but the good person thing to do. I respect the hell out of you for taking care of your parents like that. Good luck with looking for another off-roader and we all know you're not going ANYWHERE!

Thanks! Yeah, just got the title in the mail today. Trying to figure out which is the better tax option- gift them the title or write up a cheap bill of sale for them? I'm excited for my parents. It's the least I could do for the people that birthed and raised me and continue to love and support me. :)

I'm test driving a 2009 Rubicon tomorrow and a 2008 JKU, too. We'll see how it goes.

Ha yeah, the FIAT has definitely done some "off-roading" but now I'm afraid I'll break it, bwhahahaha!

Mel,

It sucks to see your X go. Great truck. On the one hand I applaud your "responsibility" on the other I question getting rid of your X and a high MPG DD..... Only to test drive two Heeps. Hehe. But, hopefully a change of pace is a good thing for you.

And for real, don't go anywhere. We like having you around.

D'awwww, I feel loved!

In other news, I've been to about 3 dealers so far to test drive and look at Rubicons. Ugh, I did not realize they held their value so well. Poop. All I want are locking diffs. Which is pretty funny, since most sales people have no idea what that means. I have broadened my search to include the TRD off road package Tacomas as well. I am avoiding another Xterra for the simple reason of not wanting to fall into as deeply as I did my previous one. Well, that and the fact there are no ORs for sale out here anywhere that have not been pounded into the ground in mileage. Stay tuned.

wrangles always had and will have great resale value. The main reason for this is usually the original owner will buy one and not take it offroad they may slap on a bumper some wheels and a lift but that is about it. Then someone who wants a fun offroad toy buys it and modifies the crap out of it and then brakes it and the cycle repeats. Most people who want a offroad vehicle don't buy new since it will be scratched and damaged. Another fact of life in the US there are more wranglers offroad then probably all other vehicles combined.

Good luck in your search for a vehicle and its amazing that you where able to do that for your parents. Hopefully someday I will be able to pay back those who helped me out in life.

Got this yesterday: 2008 wrangler rubicon with 77000mi on it. 8000lb warn winch, driving lights and larger tires. All for the same price as a stock rubi. Took me 5h at the dealership to get the price i was willing to accept.
I was upsidedown in the fiat (owed more than it was worth), but they managed to make it less painful.

It is a manual which i am embarassed to say ive never owned or driven one much. Practicing in traffic is...interesting, haha!

taco...sr5 trd package winning.

I actually looked for this and could not find one even remotely in my price range. I figured i might as well get 2 lockers for cheaper than spend so much for one on the trd taco or model.

Wait, you sold the X and traded the DD in on the heep? Or financing didn't go as smoothly because of being upside down in the DD?

Haha, manual transmissions are fun. Wait til an incline at a red light when the guy behind you is inches from your bumper.

And wait till you're on a trail or on the rocks with it...buy a spare clutch and transmission jack ASAP, you'll wish you had if you pay a shop to replace your clutch when you burn one up...

Not so. I've always wheeled a manual. Never burnt a clutch.

Thanks everyone!

Congrats Mel. Was bummed to see the X go, but at least you ended up still getting something you can wheel the snot out of.

Yup, that was exactly the point of the rubi. The fiat simply no longer fit into my lifestyle- couldnt transport bike or kayak or go most places to hike etc. Rubi is now DD yes. Gas efficient? Nope. Do i care? A little, but im overall happier with the abilities of the rubi over the fiat.

Yup, you've always wheeled one, someone that's always wheeled an auto, but is going to start wheeling a manual, especially if it doesn't have a brand new clutch....

In general though, having a spare clutch and knowing how to do it yourself will save tons of cash..

Ah, but you make the assumption I plan to wheel it before I learn to drive it properly. This is not so. No wheeling until I fully understand and get the hang of driving it on city streets. I see no point in surpassing my abilities and possibly damaging the vehicle in a fit of stupidity.

Not at all Mel, but, as anyone can tell you, learning to wheel a stick is much different than learning to drive it on road. My point also was that you don't know what kind of condition the existing clutch is in...the previous owner could have dogged the hell out of it...

That said, I'm one of those guys that wheels a stick and expects the clutch to only last me a year or two, cause I feather it too much and end up burning it out faster than normal. Could I do it otherwise? Probably, but, it's how I learned...
