Gen 1 Hitch-Flip with Stock Bumper

Been smacking my tire/ hitch every time I hit up a steep incline and it was driving me crazy. I saw snickerdoodle on XOTM and loved it. Come to find out she copied Chuck on the idea for the hitch flip, so thank you both.

Requirement: 2" BL to get the bumper to work.

First remove everything from the back end of the truck.

I first did an initial test fit of the hitch flip to see how I liked the look. Problem was I could only get one bolt on each side to hold up the hitch. The hitch's bracket would hit the frames internal walls and not allow it to slide further back.

The fun part. Get out a sledge hammer, a buddy and a few beers. While your buddy holds the hitch in place, give it a few good wacks from the under side to get it to wedge it's self between the frame.

You can see that we now have it flush with the frame. I used a thick screw driver to line up the bolt holes. Stick it in a hole and pry the hitch to get them lined up.

Once they are lined up drop in the frame stiffener so flat is to the outside. All the bolts should drop into place.

Now the hard part. Go slow and take your time. After taking lots of measurements and under cutting it every time, using a cutting wheel I began to shave off parts of my bumper. Take a sharpe and draw out your lines.

This was like the 12th test fit. Once your happy with the bumper sitting, your plastic step guard is not getting in the way of the hatch, go ahead and crawl under there with a sharpe. Mark the holes where your bumper bracket will mount. It's a PITA and you prob only can get two, but that's fine. If you have two on one side, use the bracket to match the third. I used a steel step bit, and made the holes a little larger than needed, to compensate for human / alcohol error.

Once all are drilled, put the bolt brackets into the frame, almost resting in there perspective holes. Slowly slide the bumper in place, and align the holes. Now stick your hands into that tiny spot and push the brackets through the frame and bumper. Tighten nuts and DONE!

I'll be picking up some C channel molding and a can of spray paint to finish this off. To get rid of the harsh edges I'll lay down the rubber molding and secure it in place with some black silicone. (pic updates soon)

Yeah chuck here and snikerdoodle gave me the idea on the flip, and I hated not having the bumper. Well my buddy and I looked at each other and popped out a sharpie and started cutting! Very pleased.

Dono if you can do the flip with the stock hitch though.

Cool Idea thats for sure, gets rid of the need for the basic off road bumper, where you got your rear plate now?

If anyone messes up their bumper and wants one off of my '01 they are welcome to come to Brooklyn and get it...free, not shipping...

Nice write up.

Last night I was attempting to finish the flip hitch on my truck.. well a sawzaw, grinder and BFH finally got the hitch to move back a bit. My hitch was open ended on the area that gets bolted to the frame. I ended up having to sawzaw the end off. :) and then it still wouldnt go all the way back to let the holes line up. So i hammered in some of the area it mounts to. Then it still was a bit of a hassle so out came the grinder and BAM! It fit.. well at least one bolt on each side. This weekend I plan on just drilling the other holes out. Then i get to chop the bumper.

Do you happen to have a measurement on you width of your cut?

I think that since i will be mounting my plate to the left or right of the hitch and since my lights are still connected i may just drill new holes and relocated mine.

In jersey even clear plate holders they can get you for ticket wise. Heck even the deal tag holder do hickey they'll ticket you for. It's a cool idea though.

We can't have license frames in TX either. New law passed a few years back. The reason was that the upper and lower parts of the plate were hidden. Apparently there was a great abundance of fake plates running around. Although, this law isn't enforced that much, because I still see the frames.

At OP...

I really like what you have done to improve your mod Ricel.

Thats CrazY! I spent the extra money on my custom plate so I figured I would protect it... I cannot beleive that its illegal in some places! You could always use those led's and just place them above or below the plate

My hitch bends up too much to fit the original bumper on without hitting my hatch. I made some spacers using 2x1x11ga steel tube. This will allow me to mount the hitch an inch lower than my frame. Once my hitch is tamed, I'll start cutting the bumper. Hopefully I'll have some finished pics later today.

Thanks for the inspiration to cut the OEM bumper! I have more pics in my build thread (link in sig) but here are a couple of my final pics.

Chuck, doesn't having the tire under there kind of defeat the purpose of the hitch flip? Got plans to relocate it eventually?

I'm just giving you a hard time. :)

I'll put it in my cargo area when I wheel. My wife is 5-1, 110lbs; I can't guarantee that she could close the tire gate if she parked the X on a slant. /o o/

Haha nice chuck. Hey do you have molding open the edge of the cut?

If not I'll send you some.

I am almost finished with my flip hitch mod! I went a little different and cut a area of the bumper to make a hole for the hitch to slide through. Once it's complete i can share pics and also update my build thread! Such a great mod!

I work on the side at a west marine boat retail store. They had some great edging that is great for this. It's channel is cored with staple like pieces which allow you to pinch it against the edge.

No prob doodles!

Yeah, it's great to work with, if you need a tighter bite, just pinch the channel with some pliers and bend the metal inward.

'I put that S*** on everything!'
