DT headers

Been thinking of getting some dt headers but wanted to hear what people thought of them. Are the hp and mpg gains worth the cost? What other work would need to be done to get the full benefits? Keep in mind ill fall in love with whoever answers first.

I've heard varying reports. Some people have said - noticeable gains - others have said only noticeable sounds. I think the question is, do you plan on doing anything else to your exhaust system or do you just want to slap on headers for the sake of headers? Are you going to get a proper tune?
I feel when most people alter the exhaust and don't notice anything, it's because they either didn't get a tune or had too high expectations or didn't do something else that should be combo'd in. For example - headers + high flow cats + tune + y pipe delete = noticeable difference in both sound and gains.

True love! But why must i fall for someone with such tiny arms? You can never hold me!

Thats kinda what im trying to get at. I wouldnt think that just headers would have enough of an impact without increasing flow elsewhere down the line. The headers aint exactly cheap. Trying to figure out if its even worth it after you do the other work.....

i just put a set on mine. I havent noticed any gains on power or fuel economy. I still have 4.63 gears, 33s, and a snorkel, and a factory exhaust.

my goal for the headers was to replace the cheap cast factory style manifolds that always crack.

just headers without changing the rest of it will not show much,,, but pairing it with a better exhaust will. I have them and would do them all over again in a hot second. I had a bad cat and it was cheaper for me to go the headers than it was to start replacing the OEM cats

I've got the DT headers, had them on for a while now. I installed them because I believed my primary catalytic converters had failed, and I couldn't afford to replace them ($550 EACH compared to $460 for a set of headers). I didn't notice any gains in power or fuel economy, though I'm also still running stock-style aftermarket secondary catalytic converters and a stock y-pipe and never got "a tune" - I didn't think there was any tuning that could be done to the first gen trucks?

I will say that the install is a big pain the butt, unless you've got a body lift. That extra room between the frame and body really makes it a bit easier I've heard (I don't have a bodylift). I had to cut my old secondary catalytic converters into pieces to remove them, and I had to partially drop the crossmember that supports the transmission/transfer case to install my new cats. The front driveshaft should also come out to clear up space.

Another thing to consider: I don't know how vehicle inspections are where you live, but if they still check emissions with a sniffer I'm not sure you'll even be able to run headers since they eliminate the primary cats, which do most of the work. If they DON'T check emissions with a sniffer, and if they only go by the OBDII for emissions-related codes (like Massachusetts), then you'll be fine with headers if you also install a set of CEL eliminators on the downstream O2 sensors.

With that, you can either run the stock secondary catalytic converters, or aftermarket stock-style (DON'T get the Pacesetter ones. Mine lasted 7,000 miles before cracking, leaking, and falling apart. Instead, get the ones made by Eastern Catalytic.) OR, if you really want to pony up, you could have custom mid-pipes made, either with OR without converters (most would use universal-fit high-flows), but you still must have O2 bungs on the mid-pipes, WITH a set of CEL eliminators on your downstream O2 sensors. Without the CEL eliminators, you'll throw an emissions code and your CEL will be on all the time.

I got my Eastern Catalytic cats from RockAuto. Part numbers 40411 and 40542

I use a pair of these 90 degree CEL eliminators on each of my downstream O2 sensors: http://www.bigdaddiesgarage.com/angled-cel-fix.html#Angled O2 Simulator Big daddies Garage

Bear in mind, the condition of your truck may require you to replace the exhaust studs as well. My truck has always been in New England, and therefore, everything was rusty. I replaced all of the studs & nuts, and obviously you'll have to replace all the gaskets. Just some added expenses that I don't want you to overlook, haha.

I noticed a little better performance on the highway at higher RPMs but no improvement in MPGs. I don't think they are worth it as just a mod unless you need to change the factory manifolds and/or the primary cats. I have a 2001 with 33s and stock everything else other than a K&N filter. I would think you might see more gains getting rid of all the cats and replacing the stock exhaust and intake with something better though but then you are getting into a lot of money that could be spent on lift/tires/armour etc.

If your manifolds or primary cats are shot, get the headers. It's cheaper in the long run. Buy enough studs and nuts from the dealership to do them all. 2 per cylinder. When you remove the stock stuff, some nuts may come off, some studs may come out. You need an E10 external torx for the studs. On the back cylinders 3 & 6, you have to remove them because there are 4 holes and the manifolds and headers use opposite pairs.

As Church said, a body lift makes it so much easier. I was able to do 90% of the install through the wheel well. Which made it really easy.

Thanks. Good thing i got the BL. Whenever the stock stuff is totaly shot i have a good list of what ill need. Or whenever i actualy build this custom exaust ive been dreaming about for 7 years. No reason to rush for now. Im just gonna focus on re-armouring this thing and installing some 5.13's. These 33s w 4.6's are killing me.

my BF just won some at WENT and after talking to Reeder- who said he noticed almost no difference, just maybe 11 hp or something (correct me if i'm wrong) no sound difference, no better fuel economy, and they took 8 hours each to install- he handed them off to someone who wanted them more. cause not errbody got time fo dat.

Shoot, I would have snagged them lol. When I replaced my 2 front cats, I didn't even think of getting headers and I'm pissed that I didn't.

hah! everyone keeps saying that. i dont think he was ready to give them away to whoever. it was a "special someone" - he would have ended up putting them on his own truck otherwise.
