Thanks guys! It took us almost two weeks to come up with something that wasn't over the top or not able to be replicated.

The thing that I love the most is that the winch isn't mounted to the bumper. Only the fairlead is attached to the bumper and the line goes through there. The winch is bolted to a plate that's welded to the frame, low, which is helping to strengthen the front end.

The bumper itself is very light, easily handled by a single person. The hoop on the top is really there to protect a set of lights that they plan on putting on later as well as to protect the radiator if they roll over.

Bumpers are so hard to do though. But it did turn out nice. I'll be building something similar for my own rig, with a couple of differences to make it my own.

Heres my junk before paint.

Its 2"x.250 wall tube and about busted my buddies jd3 bender.
Heres how its mounted.

And the front tube is welded into the notch frame horns plus theres another tube behind the gusset. It has to be strong bc i use my truck like a bulldozer. I still have to put my 2 weld on clevis tabs yet but they will both be about 2" from the bottom of the 2main vertical tubes and burned in.

Ha I forgot about this thread. Here's stage 1 completed on my bumper.

Stage 2 will inc the flares to protect the fenders. Someday when I can afford a winch, I'll put one in there, too.

Not an X, but still a Nissan.
My son's pathy new front bumper we just finished.
Still have to install the driving lights in the large holes.
Will eventually get powdercoated and add 7" lights in the hoop. He's broke right now after this. :)

Thanks

He's learning as we go on this stuff.
Pretty naturally talented welder and quickly picking up the metal work and machining talents.
If I can make a go of this full- time in the future, that's where he'll be too.

Already works for me making parts.

Here's one I made for my powerstroke.

I'll take one of those hybrid half-tube/half-plate bumpers for 1.5gen. Kthxbye.

Please?

Doing another one of these again reinforced how much a PITA these are to build!!!
Took about a week and a half to make this one.
Just tube is one thing, but plating and recessing lights just sucks!!

Max, first of all, sweet bumpers. Second, I have a hydraulic jack type pipe bender and I'm pretty sure that it will bend the tubing enough for me to make a bumper along the same lines as yours, but I figured that I would check with the obvious bumper expert before I went out and bought a bunch of steel. I also have a couple of welders and an ESAB 875 plasma cutter, so cutting and welding won't be an issue. I'll have to take the plate steel somewhere to get punched though, but I think I have a place to go to. If you could throw me some advise, that would be great. I'm also going to build a rear bumper and tire rack, but they don't seem too complicated. I've built a couple bumpers in the past, but nothing that complex. I really need to do something to get my Xterra to not look like all the other ones that I see. Thanks.

Hey ranger - I used a tube jack bender for my bumpers. It can be done. The only drawback is some indentations inthe tubing at bend points. Still, I thought they turned out pretty well. Didn't use any plating. Good luck man!

The simple benders aren't the greatest, but I've seen some pretty good work out of them. Just comes down to skill and ingenuity. I watched Penski over on TNX start with limited skills and equipment and turn out one of the baddest trucks around, so the sky is the limit (other than time, money...)

I've got an early JD2 bender http://www.vansantent.com/tube_bending_machines.htm like is one.
For holes, I use the the SM000 hole saw kit. http://www.vansantent.com/sheet_metal_cutters.htm Much better than regular holes saws, though they work too. Just need a very slow hand drill, drill press (slow) or mag-base drill. Can't remember the dimple die set brand (you need at min a 10k press to dimple. I often go 12 to 15k lbs).

IMO, nothing more than .120 x 1.75 tubing needed, or you just end up very heavy very fast. I use 1" 1-5/8" and 1-3/4" .090 to .120.
10 ga metal for the main plate is good if you have sufficient bracing behind it. I used 12 ga for the wing fillers on my own, as you may have to roll or form it.

1/4" for the winch plate is ok with bracing.

On the wings under the main tube (if you go that way) just be sure to bake bends on both line up and be on the same "plane" if you're going to plate them so the plate will form flat.

Here's the link to my bumper build pics. Not saying it's the way to build it at all, but a few ideas anyway. If I was doing it again, I'd change a few things to make it lighter. It was my first winch tube/plate bumper ever.

Thanks for the info and the link. I get home in about three weeks and I'll be starting on it after I recover from a few nights of drinking. I only have about a month at home, but I don't really have anything else to do. I'll be sure to get a lot of pictures. In my line of work, I only get to hang out in America for about three months a ear, so mods will be done in bunches. I would like to get an older Xterra to build, so I don't completely void my warranty.

The pictures on your site I looked at for the 2000-2004 Xterra stuff are half covered up with a white boarder that I can't see the product itself and the mods have still not fixed your username on here so it doesn't bleed over the first word in your posts...I don't know why but that is really bugging me!

jmac, I'm not sure what we can do about his name bleeding over. I looked at the full site on my phone and it was fine so this makes me think it must be your browser or something.

Yeah. Site is working on all the standard browsers, not sure where the problem is. Sorry
As for the Name Bleed...I have worked with some science technomancers and we have come up with a solution...;)
