I need to get behind distributor can I pull it and then just place it right back in? I mean as long as I keep it in the same position?

In theory, yes. Pulling the cap and taping down the rotor will help. I'd still recommend renting a timing light.

If I bring the engine to top dead center or TDC then mark the rotor position at plug 1 can I not just place back in to return it to the same position without worrying about needing a timing light?

It really doesn't matter where the engine is when you pull it, but my theory is this:

You spend <insert excessive length of time> verifying and marking the location of the rotor. You pull the dizzy and OH CRAP THE TAPE CAME LOOSE. Or you go to put it back on and you can't see the sharpie marks. Neighbor comes over and absent mindly spins it. Bad things happen. I'd rather spend some cash up front to have the tool on hand, then return it for a full refund should something that could go that wrong happen.

Not really sure taping it would help anyway since the spline slants so when I pull the dizzy the rotor will actually turn some anyway.

My issue is I need to replace the bypass hose and I figured maybe pulling the dizzy would be a better way of getting to the hose then pulling the timing belt. The whole timing belt route seems like an awful lot of work.

I've done it, its no issue just make sure the rotor is clocked to the same position. I marked both the mount and the location of the rotor with a sharpie. Pulled it off lined the marks back up no issue.

Doesnt the mount only go in one way since the the clamp bolt is on one side?
