Blue smoke at a cold start????

So here is the timeline. I went to get the oil changed at my local shop I use and as always I took my six quarts of Mobil 1 Full Synthetic. The technician drained the oil, changed the filter, and then replaced the oil. He poured five quarts into the resivoir and then cranked it for a brief period (a few seconds), then shut it off. He checked the level about a minute later and then added a little more until it showed full on the dipstick. I then started it after about ten minutes or so and everything was fine. I then drove around all day with it and no smoke. That was Saturday, yesterday my wife got in it and fired it up for a few seconds to move it out of the way so she could leave to run errands, and I don't know if it smoked then or not, but she only had it running for less than a minute. Then it sat the rest of the day. I went out to start it up this morning, 25 degrees outside and a lot of came out, not dripping water, but the fog type. With that there was a small cloud of blue smoke. It was only right at starting and didn't happen again. So being that this has not happened since I have owned the truck I am asking to see if anyone can A) tell me what is causing that and if it is normal, or B) if anyone else has had the same issue. Thanks!

I believe that the blue tint to the smoke is oil in the combustion chamber. Could be a fluke, but I'm pretty sure that a blueish color in exhaust is where oil somehow seeped into the cylinder while sitting. That is why it's there for a moment and then it's gone. It could be due to the temperature outside, as someone else has said on here recently, metal contracts in the cold and if your running a thin oil then it can happen.

Maybe TJ could bless us with some of his wisdom on the subject.

I had a Jeep this happened to, i was running a light weight organic oil in the winter and the same thing happened. I switched to 10W30 instead of 5W30 for winter driving and it fixed the problem. With the extreame cold you may have oil slipling past the rings until the engine reaches normal temprature.

I'm assuming this is the first time you've experienced this issue and/or noticed it? I don't know how the cold weather effects the issue or if this is a known issue with the Xterras in general but if it is something that's been going on for a while, I would guess it's the valve stem seals leaking. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I'm only voicing my thoughts based on when my miata blew a blue puff on initial start.
