First Fill-Up (of many)
Okay now I got a little bit of mud on the X, time for a place to put pics / video / comments.

Just got home from a 3 day camping trip at Land Between the Lakes. Kayak fishing and running a few roads defined as "not maintained for passenger cars" were the main activities.

It rained on Thursday and most of Friday morning, I got there Friday afternoon. Everything was pretty wet, I took a little trip down a road I have a Geocache on to fix it. (and nearly no one visits because the greater Geocacheing crowd are pansy's come out to the wilderness then wonder why they can't get their cute little Honda's down there.) Worked as a little warm up for the X, a deep rut and a downed treetop that was all crushed down into the road was about all I found.

For proper perspective on why this is significant, I have a video of me taking my Escape down that same hill, and it was a challenge, but I did take it down there and back. With the Xterra, a total cakewalk, no problem, no sweat, just goes over like nothing. The rear wheel lifts and the E-limited slip kicks in, this isn't time for a locker, save that for the real work.

Sadly I did more wheeling the next day and didn't get any video or pic of that. Sorry. It was pretty muddy, but it's been so dry all year the bottoms of the puddles were solid, and that made me feel better going on as I do still have the junk stock tires on. Some of the crossings were 8-10 inches deep, I think a few were a shave deeper, but just wallowed out puddles not very long. I did hit the locker just as a precaution on one spot. I seen where I had a good chance of getting crossed and slip into some fairly deep ruts on an uphill section of trail, and I did. I didn't bottom out but it couldn't have been too far from it. The X powered on through, and when I got to the top straightened back out. I generally avoided obstacles if I could and took the easiest line, I didn't have a second rig with me so not looking to get stuck. Overall I'd say it was on the moderate side, but that is hard to define. The X never failed me in stock configuration, but it was enough to challenge me at times, I still consider myself a novice wheeler and picked a trail I'd been on before. (Took it earlier this year with a guy over on TNX.)

Ran into a few Jeeps along the way, I smiled and hollered a friendly hello as I went by, they managed to throw a half hearted wave at me as they kind of looked at me like I was an alien. I seen their tracks the rest of the way out till I hit pavement again. They were gunning it through all the puddles I seen later and I had to spot a few places to tell if it was actually deep or if they just dumped fresh mud on a dry rut, most places it was the latter.

Very nice! I've been debating a similar trip to yours only north thru WI. Same deal kayaking and dirt roads. Mostly for Fall colors. Looks like a great trip great inspiration for the rest of us to do the same get outside. Thanks for the trip report.

Depends on the specifics, but I'd be up for a group thing sometime. Right now I want to stick to the more moderate stuff though, so definitely want to know what I'm getting into first.

Another camping trip, done a little more exploring and scouting for future trips.

Turned back on this hole, no rig to pull me out and it was deep enough that I wasn't sure what was under there:

mudchet came out later in the day, great to meet another member here and had fun running some trails. Will have to do it again soon.

This was also my first tow with the X, no more borrowing a truck to pull the camper with. Pulled great, very stable.

Airmapper took us to some pretty cool trails. They definitely werent your run of the mill crushed gravel (yawn) road/trails. good times.

Visited a local landmark today where you can climb on top a bluff and look off for miles and miles. Nice side note is while not much more than a few paths, I got to kick it in 4LO and park in the 4x4 only "reserved space." That E-limited slip continues to amaze me, I crawled up on slick clay mud with fine tiny gravel in it, which had been freezing/thawing. It thought about it a bit but the ABS felt it's way up there, I could feel the wheels swapping sides to stop spinning. I didn't even need my locker.

Met a couple hiking down and the dude told me he was surprised to see I had parked up there, he told me he thought it was too slick. Then he said (with a sarcastic grin) "Maybe I'll go get my Honda and pull it up."

Afterwards I forded a creek on a road nearby to wash my tires off. I never get pics of the cool stuff, shame on me.

Indeed. Perhaps I'll work on that soon. You ought to bring that 2nd Gen up to LBL sometime.

It's North-East of Hopkinsville out in the middle of nowhere, called Pilot Rock.

Looks like a good time! I lived up there and heard about Pilot Rock but never went. Next time you go to LBL I may be interested.

Not trying to steal your thread, but I am wondering who would be interested in going to LBL? We could camp, I was looking at the maps and looks like plenty of dirt roads to go riding, and could go to Turkey Bay for some trail riding.

I had thought about maybe trying to have a campout in June, but had not said anything yet. Mar-May the best trails close. About 3-4 members on TNX have shown interest in LBL, and you make about the 4th member here interested.

I have an LBL thread in the regional section, but a few runs have failed to launch so far. I'm thinking of going out once more before March, and then again after the trails are open again, then it will be warm enough to camp.

I've mapped about all of LBL for trails I think are worth doing. I've done a few solo scout runs, and have confirmed some trails I want another rig along before I take all the way through.

Nice pics. Looks like a pretty area you're exploring. Isnt it nice to take your X up some trail and be impressed how easy it made it feel? And then have people see it and be impressed? Kudos to you!

Got a little off road in on a camping trip, I had a Geocache out this road and got tired of fixing it constantly, so I went to pull it out.

Can you believe no one hardly ever went back there to find it, pansys....

Anyway, I got a little 3 wheeling in. X still amazes me how it takes this no sweat. Sucks that my camera quality went to junk, it must have not liked the lighting.

Nice!

What road was that at LBL? It looked pretty rutted out. You going to nXm? If not, when's your next trip to LBL? Maybe we can meet.

146, it only recently got that washed out enough to flex on.

I'm not attending nXm this time. If you want to head out to LBL again let me know, I don't have any particular plans yet, but maybe we can find a good day to go up there.
