4x4 Click

I'm sure most of y'all have heard, or heard me complain about.. There's a pretty loud click coming from my passenger side hub or something haha. It's only when I'm in 4x4.

Just yesterday I got the new CV axle in after it went out on me. Hoping that was my hub problem as well.. I put it in 4 wheel drive and... Still clicked.

So just a few minutes ago, I tried switching the hubs (passenger side hub to the drive side and vice versa) and... Still clicked.

Which means it has to be something in the hub assembly I guess.. Idk, I'm stumped haha

Any advice or anything is appreciated! :bmmd:

Take your hubs completely off then go for short testdrive in 4wd. No clicking then the issue is the hubs. Still clicks? Could be the other CV or the U joints on the front shaft.

Shouldn't the swapping of the hubs and it still clicking say that it's not the hubs? It's clicking on the passenger side so I took the passenger side hub and put in on the driver side and I put the driver side hub on the passenger side and the passenger side still clicked. That should tell me that it's not the hubs, right?

And it was clicking before and after I put on the CV axle.. It was the passenger side CV I replaced so it couldn't have been the CV making the noise.

Did you swap all the thrustwashers and hardware (hub guts) left to right or just the housings?

Not to discredit your dianostic abilities. But, its usually pretty difficult to tell left or right as far as where the sound is coming from. Especially in the CV's case as generally the inner side fails. Which would make the noise sort of middle based. I currently have a CV out and the loud clicking is obvious.

I've had the entire front of my truck disassembled there isn't much that could cause a clicking. The 4wd system uses sealed bearings or bushings and is relatively trouble and maintainence free outside of the hubs and cv's.

I'd put it up on stands in 2wd. Climb under the truck and turn the front drive shaft by hand. After a few turns you'll hear a click as each hub engages. I'd make sure both hubs engage.

When I did the left to right swap, it was just the outer hub, no hub guts haha. I didn't touch the snap ring on either side.

I've drove the X in 4 wheel drive and had my dad listen, and he's drove it while I've listened, and I'm about 99% sure it's coming from the passenger side.

My cousin has a lift in his garage and I'm thinking about just using it to try to figure out where this clicking is coming from. It's driving me crazy just not knowing where it's coming from! I need to know!!! haha!

From what others have said.. If you hear the axel on the right.. Then its the left side...

I havent found this to be true.. I hear driver side.. Replaced Driver side and it fixed the issue...

That's interesting.. I'll have to put it up on the lift and turn the wheels myself and hopefully that'll be able to shed some light on the situation.

Honestly man, think small. I thought I needed new cv axles when I was at NXM, but found out it was just my rusted out Exhaust shield spinning against the front driveshaft making that noise. I'd make sure nothing is clicking against that first before you do anymore work. Always start small then go from there/.

I remember that! That's not a bad idea.

Just get under there and just inspect any possible thing it could outside of the hub. Thanks man!
