Back story: I had to get my truck fixed so that the check engine light would go away plus also get an oil change and change the fuel filter. Well my mechanic informed me that there are four cats on the first gen??? That seems a little bit crazy to me. But why would nissan do this? Those bastards are expensive. Are they trying to rape us in the long run? Geez. Sorry for my rant

The 2nd cats aren't monitored, so just straight pipe them. If you're in a community that doesn't have emission testing, replace the manifolds with headers when they leak, optional generic cats, then custom exhaust.

I believe the 4 cats thing is a requirement for vehicles in California and the rest of the states and in other countries there is either no requirement at all or only requires 2. From a production stand point, and to avoid additional logistics issues, it is easier to have one vehicle for all than vehicles per region specific as Nissan could incur in additional logistics expenses should a vehicle go to the wrong region.

Think I had the back two removed when I did my exhaust. Then again it doesn't matter to me. No emissions here regardless, I gutted the cats on my chevy. Half the people here dont even have full exhausts. Just a foot of pipe or two off the manifold/headers.

I have no idea what the emissions read on an Xterra. However, I know a buddy in CT that made a bolt on kit for his mustang he puts on to go get it tested then takes it back off after, lol. Could always look to get cats off a junked X maybe and rig up a system like that.
