Three most important things.

Body lift, Sawzall, and all new beefed up steering.

/did I mention the Sawzall?
//a lot of sawzall
///a whole lot

I've wondered the same thing. I'm thinking of picking up a used 35" and having it mounted on my spare tire rim just to see how it might work. I have a 2" BL, 3" SL and I've already cut lots more off than I think most guys do for 33"s.
The steering upgrade is pretty obvious but a diff drop would probably be a good idea as well. If they fit, I wouldn't want to run them without re-gearing a well.

With the cost of gears and steering upgrades, maybe it's a better idea to just SAS for 37"s...

I got calmini steering, BL, suspension lift, brand new steering gear, guess all I need is to cut her up :) would be great if someone had pictures of what I'm about to do.

That just means it is your responsibility to take pictures :)

Diff drop? Wouldn't the tires push the suspension up, which pushes the frame up, which pushes the diff up? Wouldn't it all stay lined up unless you are moving the diff/axle relative to the frame?

Moving the diff would only help with the the axle/knuckle/diff mating; tires would have zero impact. And after seeing what another member went through, I wouldn't bother for less than a half inch.

So, if you're thinking 35s on a Gen 1, I'd probably start thinking SAS and 37s

I will be the first to recommend that NO ONE ever do a diff drop :)

Taller tires lift the steering knuckle up...suspension is the same geometry, so the frame is lifted the same amount...so tires would have no impact on the CV axle matings...

What I would get for 35s:

Grass roots center link,
Bandit4x4 idler arm bushings
Total Chaos Idler arm brace
Heavy Duty tie rod adjusters
Plenty of spare tie rod ends

Is it enough? Who knows...depends how you wheel

there was a guy on club x running a 3" body lift and 35's on stock steering. Last time I heard from him on there he was having some steering issues, but I had that problem with the stock stuff on 33's so no big surprise there. not sure if he ever went off road or not. If it was just a on road truck I think you could probably get away with 35's, but I dont know that the tie rod ends or adjusters would hold up to the extra forces applied off road when you were in a situation where there are horizontal forces being applied to the bottom of the tire. If you converted to heim ends or went with a total chaos setup it might work out better. If I were a little braver and felt like hacking my fenders more I might try it in the future and see what happens. If it holds up, then great, if not it might motivate me to SAS.

Yeah man...depending on money situation...a king kong total chaos steering setup would be legit. Thing looks bomb proof.

The reason I say diff drop is because there is enough stress on your axles with 33s and a 3" SL as is. Mine have started to do funny things at full steering lock and when flexed out. Putting 35" tires only adds more weight so all the stress is increased past what most of us already experience. I know it is a pain in the ass to do, but anything you can do to relieve some of the stress you are going to be adding will help.
I'm doing the diff drop because I have an extra front axle I am putting a lokka in. I also need to do the oil pan gasket so the front diff has to come out for two things. It would seem silly to me not to do it.

There was a guy years ago running 35s on ifs. I'll see if I can find the old thread about it on Cx. For what it costs you might as well convert it to SAS.. In the end your in a stronger situation vs trying to keep the ifs going.

Dave I think it was 'Alpha' on CX.. silver X, lived in FL IIRC

For what its worth, I'm running damn heavy 34/10.5/15 super swamper LTB's on desert runner wheels

My steering is definitely upgraded though.. the centerlink and spindles have been reamed out for 1 ton GM tie rod ends because my adjusters are now 1.25" OD, 1" ID DOM tubing with right-hand and left-hand thread adapters welded to them.. just used jam nuts to lock the TRE's in place

It's worked great so far! After destroying 4 adjusters I decided it was time to do something else lol. No problems with my steering at all now.. did blow up a CV last time I was wheeling though so I think I've found the new weak link

Now that looks awesome!!! After the 3 tie rods I have broken, I need to figure out a way to make the steering much stronger...I was planning grassroots center link with HD tie rod adjusters, but I didn't think about other options...

Aside from the Total Chaos setup.. I don't think there's much that will be stronger than that setup.. aside from solid axle swapping lol

Yeah that King Kong set up is badass. Theres a guy from LA that lives in NC now that owned the total chaos SEMA show truck. He used to come wheel URE with it and man that thing was so cool.
