I just got a new head unit so I can hook up my iPod and return back to the 21st century. Well I have found out that every time I start the truck up I have to unplug the 3.5 mm jack and plug it back in when the head unit has started up. Extremely annoying. So I had an extra plug that I cut open to find out what is inside and this is what I found:

So my question is; is there anyway I can hook up a switch to turn the jack "on and off" and if it is possible which wires go where?

Its strange in the first place that you have to unplug it for the headunit to recognize it, have you called the manufacture about it?

Best guess on the color though would be the black, typically the common (negitive). I do advise against this because it can severly degrade the audio quality.

thats what i thought too it is very odd. i thought when i hooked it up that it would be a set it and forget it type thing. its a kenwood ddx470 head unit and when plugging in the iPod I had to plug in the iPod cord AND the 3.5 mm head phone jack. I thought it would work by just plugging in the iPod cord.

how come it would degrade the audio quality?

The problem is that it is picking up 2 different connections on one device and that's why you are having to unplug and replug to get it working. I have a Kenwood head unit and don't have to use both connectors just one or the other.

hmmm...when i first installed it i only hooked up the ipod connector to charge it and thinking that it would act like my computer, be able to see what is on the ipod itself and play the media through that. it worked, it saw what the file was and began to play it but the audio would not come through the system until i plugged in the head phone jack.

Keep in mind I'm no expert in this subject but in every car I've ever had with an ipod ready aftermarket head unit I have never had to connect both aux and ipod connector at the same time. I am not saying this isn't possible just very unlikely otherwise there is no purpose to have a dedicated ipod cable.

Just seems to me either a setting is wrong on the radio or something or maybe you have a defect of some kind.

No, USB data is USB data. If it works with an iOS device, it works with all of them. I'm thinking you got a bad head unit.
