Hey Gang,

Picked up an ‘02 XE ‘World Champion’ edition five years ago from a friend, who had a not-so-good result with texting and driving.

Anywho, picked it up for a $1,000 and have been modifying ever since. Got the 4x4Parts 3-inch with AALs and a Shrock front bumper to boot (replacement for friend’s smashed front end).

I’ll have some good stories later but for right now, I need help with the torsion bars. I did the lift but the front end is still lower then normal. I have about 1.5 inches of clearance off the bump stops and by golly, I paid for that extra inch, so I want it.

I’ve read several threads from several boards and videos, red sweatshirt guy, kid in garage guy, etc. I get the concept except for one part. The how-tos seem to go in different directions with this, but when taking the weight off the vehicle, do you jack juuust enough to touch the jack to the cross member, jack it enough to make the truck parallel to the ground, or jack the truck so the front wheels are off the ground?

It has a rake now, but it looks like a 70s Mopar drag car. I even took a leaf out of the three pack in the rear.

Goal is mild overlanding, towing a rally car and snow rig.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Kris

so what your saying is that you are having problems with cranking the torsion bar keys for lift? and or they are already maxed out and you need to reindex them? that thread can be found here.

the UCAs you bought isnt what actually provides the lift. you lift the truck by tightening on the torsion bar keys. all the UCAs do is correct your alignment; caster/ camber, etc.

oh and now that ive reread this i see you actual problem. yeah you jack up the truck so that the weight is off the front. crank the tbars. lower back down. measure lift added, then repeat. you X will always have a little bit of front end rake and that AAL should settle after a bit too.

here is mine after i had to reindex my tbars. i have low pro bump stops so i was able to get a little more out of the from end. from what ive read, idealy you want no less than 1/4" space between the bottom of you UCA and that bump stop. so assuming you stip have the factory stops if you follow that rule you may have lift 1/2" less than me. also i have a 2 inch body lift as well.

Ahh, yes, so for instance I have the wheels off the ground now to do the bearings, races and brakes, etc., so while it’s up there, I can crank the TBs a couple splines, then let it down, drive it around and remeasure?

The distance between the top of the bump stop and the bottom of the UCA right now is about 1.5 inches.

The left bolt head on the adjuster is about an inch into the subframe and the right side is about a half inch into the subframe.

I’m assuming there’s not much more adjuster room and that a reindex is in order.

That 1.5 inch rake is fine with me, I just know it’s way too much right now.

Your rig looks great by the way and thanks for the help!

Yeah that much of difference I'd say you are better off reindexing. Of you fallow that thread I linked earlier its pretty simple. Now depending on what part of the world you live in, road salts are gonna make pulling the tbars out of the lca spline pretty fun. And yeah once you start cranking and you lower it back down to check the height really all you need to do is back up and drive back forward a bit to settle everything. Just make sure before you pull the bars out to reminded that all the tension is out of them, those suckers are deadly.

And no problem, always nice to help.

I’m square in the Rust Zone of New England. Road salt AND salty ocean air.

Good news is I just put the lift kit on in October, which included new TBs, which I slathered in anti-seize.

I’ve basically replaced the entire front end, even new LCA bushings (I’m still swearing). Replacing bearings, races, brakes, ball joints again after the front left tire decided to fall off and bounce into the woods — while Wifey was driving.

After TBs and alignment, rear brakes and timing belt, then off to the woods again!
