Anyone have any ideas on how to turn a sinusoidal wave signal into a square wave signal for the RPM input from the variable reluctance sensor (sinusoidal wave) on the injector pump gear. The stock rpm signal system utilized a optical trigger signal which was a square wave.

Confusing huh?

Well it took me a while today to figure out that was the reason I could not register any correct signal from that revolutions sensor. But now you may be asking what is the answer to my own question... I believe the answer is going to be a HEI module and I will guinea pig this one too. Sigh... all of this just to get the stock tach to work.

Oh yea, the ricer filter came in today... looks cheesy but it will do the job. Tomorrow I think the exhaust flange kit i need will be in. But I fear soon this project will start going REALLY slow as I have a job offer from Freightliner and a interview with a Kenworth tomorrow, and once I start working barely anything will get done

got a weird sound coming off the transmission after i rewired the throttle position switch. need a favor from one of you guys.

turn your ignition to the on position without starting it, wait for all the crap to cycle off, once you hear nothing, floor your accelerator pedal to WOT and listen for a buzz or humming sound from the transmission or anywhere on the truck. let me know if you hear anything or nothing at all.

After brainstorming with a buddy, he says an analog to digital converter may work, pulling the old rpm sensor and putting it in, or just swap gauge cluster from the other vehicle and do it that way....

He says you're probably going to rub into more problems like this if you don't swap the whole cluster, he helped do a V8 swap on a wrangler and said it was a total nightmare to get instrumentation to work. They ended up just putting custom gauges in.

I'm about to walk out the door, but check and see if one of the Dakota Digital converter boxes can handle the task, thats how I see a lot of engine swap tach fixes done.

Mirage, the dash will remain the same. The old rpm sensor is a optical trigger located inside your stock distributor; sure you can try to take it out and mount it somewhere, but that is not really ethical right now. I have received an email back from dakota digital, and they are unsure of their system even working with my setup, and what they don't know is what kind of sensor the old rpm gauge was operating off of. I have ordered an HEI module (just a wave converter) and it should be here this week or next week. The rpm gauge is not a top priority (luxury really) and I can drive around without it, I just want everything to appear somewhat stock and drive like stock. I do appreciate you brainstorming up ideas though as you might come up with solutions that I can use or fall back on.

Hopefully that works out for you, I did some quick searching before I read your reply, saw people (all kinds of diesels, nothing nissan specific though) using http://www.dakotadigital.com/index....tegory_id=287/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd127.htm to convert the signal from hall effect sensors on injector pumps to read correctly on "gasser" tachs. Saw a few people also using this setup http://www.dakotadigital.com/index....tegory_id=287/home_id=59/mode=prod/prd129.htm , that one involves mounting the mag sensor to read off your flywheel/flexplate teeth.

Yea it just so happens the one stock sensor I want to use, uses a different wave pattern. and hall effect, optical trigger, kettering trigger output square waves. It is not too bad though, just irritating when you assume something is going to work and it doesn't. I was originally dead set on using one of dakota digital's modules, but still may have to after I get the wave pattern right.

That stinks, i'm sure you'll work it out though, its a little hang up for what you've accomplished so far. I'm lucky the tach adjustment on my V8 swap into my 240sx should be able to be done with the pot on the back of the stock tach.

coming from 240's, congrats on your swap! This has to be one of the more challenging swaps I have done yet... but I am sure there will be more

Finished the exhaust and did a real road test today

Sorry for the crappy video... just a simple dash cam. I wish the audio was at least better than that, as it does the conversion no justice.

torque feels like the vg33e, but the horsepower difference is definitely noticeable, and is going to have to be addressed after a couple hundred miles. As far as a stack, no thanks, not in my tastes. :)

quick question, on a scale of 1 to 10, how much coal can your X roll? (how much smoke comes out of the tail pipe when you hammer it down)

nice, id like to put in a request for a vid of that, if you dont mind.

after I get the last of the bugs out, lol.

I burned up the ECU yesterday so today I have went to a salvage yard and picked up another ecu and BINGO, everything is working the way it should (kinda)! The old ecu is fried and I fried it by grounding out the a/c system. With the replacement ecu I made progress on the Tach signal. FYI the tach signal is coming from a VR sensor off the injection pump gear, but I had to convert the signal with a HEI module and still trying to figure out the right amount to resistor to pull a proper rpm square wave signal. A signal is registering but not in the right boundaries so I am still working on it. Once the tach is working properly the a/c system will cycle on properly. So once the tach is working I am going to be technically done with the conversion

That's awesome news. What kind of highway manners does she have? Enough torque on demand to merge on highway ramps and such? About the same as the VG33?

You said "done." I feel like you might be leaving out a "kinda" before that word, like there is something else that you just might want to tweak. :D

Everret, It will merge just like the vg33e did... slow imho. I want to crank up the boost and fuel.. but that will ruin the mpg's i want.

bigjim, It is very confusing! I had to figure all this crap out by just reading the schematics. basically the ecu we have in the xterra translates these signals: engine coolant, RPM, TPS, A/C, PS pressure off the engine harness of which I still need. It is also needed for the TCM to work properly.

Fox, The conversion will be complete after I tune the RPM signal. Everything else after that, I consider normal tweaking or modding.

I bet having A/C up and running is making you happy, what with the heat rearing it's ugly head.

yea and if I was unable to get it working that would have been a deal breaker and I would have sold it. I am not 18 anymore and have be royally spoiled. I also have a wife and 2 kids, so everyone has to stay happy if we are to take long road trips as planned.

lol i really don't know what to say to that :confuseded:

*here is a good answer to that! I have my build thread to INSPIRE others, so you now know it is most certainly very possible to do a diesel conversion!

Had a guy come out to buy something I had on craigslist today, and he saw the turbo diesel badge on the xterra. He said "oh I didn't know they made a diesel xterra." after that it was show and tell, lol. He seemed pretty impressed and he is the first person to see the completed conversion in person, other than my wife. I say today was a good day and it made me feel pretty good

Sorry for all the crappy pics during the build... but here are some new pics with the SAME phone. I can't wait to pick up my shrockworks bumpers next week!
