Just did a test drive and she ain't shifting the way she should so I will have to address that problem here soon... think the tranny is low on fluid. Probably need to look into the electronics as well

torque converter takes a lot of fluid...... thats all i will say

Transmission issues resolved? It was just low fluid in the torque converter?

Haven't test drove it again since, as I still need more transmission fluid (ran out, and getting more in an hour). Autos require fluid for the shifting process, if low it won't shift consistently and before the test drive I should have double checked the level as I should know better than that. I am pretty confident that is what the issue was, so until I go pick up more I am working on the exhaust. BTW turbo down pipe done. Exhaust just requires the "catback" now, which includes a flex tube, glass pack, pipe and hangers.

So, exhaust, intake, trans fluid, and then, hopefully, project complete?

the swap complete.... the project... never.... there is always room for improvement. I still have to go pick up my shrock armor, put on new shoes, replace the tint, repair the driver fender, repair the paint/dings and dents, install a diesel heater, install my freezer, repair headliner, design and install custom camper lid, and more

that is with just the turbo down pipe. I went ahead and ordered another flange kit to break the exhaust up a little so that will be here wednesday or so. I took the vid because I took the truck out to reorganize my tiny garage. As far as driving goes, once the exhaust flange is in my hands and i add it to the exhaust... gonna go for a short, then mild, then long test drive. first road trip will be to Houston to go pick up and install my shrock bumpers

you can get more power out of the 3.3.... just have to experiment like this guy

That dude is chirping the tires through at least 3 gears!:rawr:

I wanted more low end torque, with better fuel economy. Something like the 4bt or 2.8L CRD are two engines I'd like to experiment with. I wish the TD27T2 was readily available, and had better power numbers. I can deal with the HP, but I'd like to see the torque numbers to be a tad higher.

Nothing a few mods can't fix, most turbo diesels take well to the basics, and some can really handle some boost, the stuff i've seen the aussies do to TD42's is awesome. I spent some time researching TD42's, still would love to do one, its a big heavy mother.

Loving this, can't wait to see it on the road.

He's lucky he has family in Japan to help import one. The nicest part about the TD27, is that it is basically made for the Xterra. There is little in the terms of fab work compared to other popular swaps. I can't wait to get a full report on highway cruising with this thing!

lmao. I was wanting to do something like that.... I might do something like that when I have everything totally complete, and I would like to record video reactions of it though.

edit: installed one of my dash cams just now

you just gotta talk to an engine importer, lots of those around for cars, it will be a lot cheaper too because they are already dealing in container loads. Jarco in georgia use to get toyota hilux diesels, saw them when we went to pick up my friends silvia front clip ~2005, I asked about getting a td27 for me and they said they should be able to do it, they just didn't have a market for it (they don't really do importing like that anymore though, mainly motors that are available in the states already). Find any place that gets a hold of JDM Nissan SR20s, RB25/26's or Honda B16/B18/H22 swaps and I bet you'll be able to get one.

Honestly it is a dream come true for me, I have seen potential for this Xterra the moment I saw it on the lot at Carmax in Maryland. I only bought it because my car broke down and we had no other means of getting back home to texas after our trip to visit family. It was what I always wanted and I could tow my car back home for repairs, which is what I did. I have struggled to pay it off and it was a bumpy road with heavy debates on selling it due to a high interest rate and poor MPG. I managed to pay it off late 2010 after struggling to pay for it since 2007. After it was paid off I debated what to do with it.... so I located and bought 2 diesel drivetrains in 2011, and the sat and waited until I was back from my tour. From the 3.3 v6 pull to now it has been about 3 months of design, fabrication, installation and trial and error it is driving and lacking very few things now. I am beyond happy with what I was able to accomplish and the support from the Xterra community! :D

Man, that is amazing. Serious rep points not only for your build, but for your determination to get it done. This was definitely a daunting task to uphold. Congrats!

Need some help guys.. I have been trying to figure out which sensor picks up for engine rpm for the instrument panel. It can only be 2 sensors, the crankshaft position sensor or the camshaft position sensor. I need a guinea pig to disconnect their crankshaft position sensor on the driver side top of your transmission bell housing. Once you disconnect that, look to see if you rpm gauge is INOP... please post with results if you are willing

My guess would be the camshaft position sensor, the tach signal comes from the ecu, and the cam sensor is the more accurate type of sensor feeding the ecu. I've seen a lot of cars where the crank sensor on top of the tranny is just for obd2, and it doesn't really do anything except for diagnostic purposes.

Thats what I was thinking but not 100% sure. The diesel setup does not use a crankshaft sensor, and only a revolution sensor operating off the injection pump gear for revolution pulsing. I just need it to register something on the gauge and then from there I will spoof the tach to register correctly for the different pulse widths. Sigh... I know I am doing something wrong and probably just need to sleep on it. On, a side note I had to rewire the Throttle position switch and sensor due to mistakes I made and troubleshooted today.

Broke my Crank sensor when I dropped the trans it reads off of the starter ring gear teeth on the flywheel. RPM's gauge worked fine. So your RPM sensor is else where. I would suspect it reads off the cam sensor.

THANK YOU!! that knocks that off the list, so it has to be the cam sensor. only 2 wires to choose from so I should be able to get that up and working tomorrow
