First and foremost, I cannot take credit for this idea. It was either SurfnSnow or DarkKnight on another board, but I can not for the life of me find the thread on it.
EDIT: It was MacGuyverMedic who first came up with the idea. I saw it long ago and had been planning to copy it for a long time, but couldn't find the thread to give props. Thanks to croftonbilly for finding it. /EDIT
Anyway, here goes:
These suck:
Get rid of 'em. There's a little slot in them that you can insert a flathead screwdriver into to pop them right out, leaving you with this:
In their place I put these:
They come in a 4-pack for around $6 at Lowe's.
I secured them with these:
It's just a matter of drilling two holes using a ³/₁₆" bit and attaching the tie down. I hit mine with some self-etching primer and Duplicolor bedliner first. Still debating on painting the screw heads as well.
And that's it. I may put the other two in in the lower corners of the hatch opening, in order to secure a cargo net to keep stuff from falling out when I open the hatch. Still debating that.
