KY-TN: LBL Wheeling & Camping - March 23

It seems there is enough interest to make this it's own thread for planning purposes. Please post and let all of us know if your interested, and if you want to camp or just come out for the day. If you have questions please ask.

I intend this to be a family friendly, and pretty casual wheeling trip, so wives, kids, family, friends, are all welcome. Bring the hole gang if you can keep up with them.

Where:
Land Between the Lakes
Google Map: http://goo.gl/maps/TQgpT
Area maps: http://www.lbl.org/VCMaps.html
Motor Vehicle Use Map: http://www.lbl.org/MVUM.html

When: Weekend of March 23 (22-23-24)

Camping:
There are several campgrounds in LBL, and back country camping. My favorite place is Energy Lake, and that is where I will be.

Everyone please make your own lodging arrangements at the location of your choice. It's possible we can all be close together in the same campground or spread out, but everyone feel free to do what you are most comfortable with.

What:
LBL offers a wide range of wheeling opportunity. It's a great place for stock rigs, new trucks, and novice wheelers. More challenge is available in Turkey Bay for those looking for more excitement with built rigs.

There are also other attractions in LBL. The primary objective of this for me is to be safe and have fun, whatever we do. Nothing is written in stone.

***Please keep in mind this is public land, government controlled, and subject to all the usual rules and regulations of the state and some specific to LBL. Do your homework if you need to know how to behave. I know it sounds redundant, and I hope no one "needs" to be told this, but just in case someone gets the wrong idea, you can't drink and drive, be reckless and dangerous, or go driving on any trail you see in LBL. Please, if you want to go wild and get into trouble, don't do it with this group.***

I know it's still over a month away, but I'd like to pin the date down. I don't know about everyone else, but it will help me plan for it being sure of the date.

Of those who have specified a preference thus far, the weekend of the 23 has been unanimous.

So should there not be any objections made soon, it sounds like it's on for March 22-23-24. Hope that works out for everyone.

I'd love to go there some day. Unfortunately March 23'rd is the day of the seXTERRA event in Prentice Cooper so that's where I'll be. Maybe next time.

This is sneaking up on us, looks like there may be a pretty good turnout.

Keep an eye on the first post, I edit it with current info.

Right now I plan on camping unless the weather goes nuts or it's really cold. I'll be there Saturday at very least. Anyone going feel free to PM me for my cell number. If you do, give me your number as well so I can put you in my address book, I rarely answer numbers I do not know, that way I don't ignore you.

For trail comms, I have CB and FRS radios on my end. Cell coverage is spotty, they work on top hills basically.

I'm assuming most of you are not terribly familiar with the area. I've come up with a few options of trails to run so hopefully we don't all get there and say "okay now what....".

I have not run all these myself, so it will be an adventure for all of us. Some could be blocked, or temporarily closed. While unlikely, it could get too rough for those of us not wheeling hard and turning back could be necessary. If there is heavy rain we might be in for a mess. I hope it's kinda damp, as dry trails there might be boring, and the dust is bad.

As it's written, these all are legal on the 2012 MVUM, I just got the 2013 MVUM so I'll run over them again, but all the major trails I've checked are still good to go on the document.

Orange Run: 32mi
Goes north from Golden pond, hitting every thru trail ending at North Welcome Station.

Yellow Run: 45mi
Starts at Golden pond, heads south hitting thru trails winding into a figure 8 and back where you started at Golden Pond.

I would be grateful if you know you are coming, or are sure your not coming, if you would let me know somehow. As of right now I'm pretty much left hanging here, no one here on XN has let me know their intentions past their posts from weeks ago, and if that still stands, wonderful, but I know things can change given that much time, so I'd like a bit more to go on just so I know what the plan is.

I mean it would really be a bummer to drive over there and no one show, which considering what I have to go on right now, could very well happen, and it would totally suck, I'd be very disappointed, and kinda annoyed. :(

Trip report, all went great. Xscape came and we did 4 trails, 2 of which challenged us a good bit more than maybe we had at first intended, but I think we were both surprised with what our Xterra's could do.

Had a great time, the weather cooperated nicely despite a somewhat dismal forecast.

Didn't get as many pics as I would have liked, but here are the ones worth showing. Too busy wheeling to be a good photographer too.
