Whining/Whistling noise....

2011 Pro-4X 110k miles. New to me with no service history.

Ok, so I changed the engine oil, oil filter, automatic transmission fluid, transfer case fluid, front and rear differential gear oils, and coolant. Everything looked good, except the front differential oil which was sludgy and a lot of fine filings on the magnet.

Took it out for a few miles to get it up to operating temp for final engine oil and atf level adjustment, and to work the coolant through. Heard new whining noise on acceleration only. Sounds like a vacuum leak. Did I knock a vacuum line loose somewhere? I'm just hearing about the timing chain thing, and I hope it's not that.

Had wife start vehicle while I listened under the hood. After a little warm-up, had her bring it to 3000 rpm. Sounded perfect, no unusual noise.

Could it be a transmission noise? Transmission seemed to be over full when I checked it before fluid change. I took out 3 qts plus 8 oz and replaced only 3 quarts. After driving about 5 miles up to 60 mph and a ten minute rest, it read just a hair below the hot full line on the dipstick. Used Nissan Matic S fluid.

It seems to be shifting more smoothly and operating normally.

Any thoughts?

Well, I see I should have checked atf at operating temp with engine running in park. Did that and added half a quart more Matic S. But, the noise appears to have been the air filter cover lid wasn't seated right after I checked the air filter. All good now.
I had a noise like that, and it was my throttle body gasket. Cleaned and replaced with new, and noise is gone. Glad you found yours.

Sorry, just getting to browsing the forum.

Glad you found the issue.

Some brands of oil filter can cause the same kind of whining with the VQ40DE as well.
