The fifth wheel conundrum

So I've got this problem where I want to go up to 33's but I hate the idea of paying full price for a spare that will only be used on a very limited basis. What does everybody do in this situation? I know there's the obvious, bite the bullet and pay full price for an identical tire which makes perfect sense when you're rocking a spare tire carrier on an aftermarket bumper. For me, that's not really going to happen unless I get rear-ended or my lottery ticket hits someday.

My wife says just roll with all five of the same tire because when I wear out the original four I'll be able to avoid buying the fifth tire the next time, assuming I go with the same tire.

I thought long and hard over the same issue, I stayed stock size partly over the spare, and partly because my X does not need to be my primary off road vehicle. YMMV.

In the process though I asked my tire shop about getting me a used spare, they were very open to the idea, but the 255/85/16's I was considering was a very odd size for this area, so not just lying around. A more common size, might be a matter of just checking with the shop for a take off the right size. Also check Craigslist for used tires. If I did change size, and I may in the future, I'll probably find a used spare in decent shape. Unless of course I can show it off on a rear carrier, then I'd go new like you mentioned.

Not a bad idea in theory, but what if you do want a different tire? Also consider tires age even if not used, so one tire will be older than the others and perhaps wear differently or be weaker. I'd do it in a heartbeat if TPMS wasn't a consideration and needing an extra matching wheel for a 5 tire rotation. Hence why I didn't buy 5 myself.

It a 20 dollar used spare in the same size? If you dont have it visible why does it matter. Just like any other spare. Just ment to get you home. Unless your planning some mayden voyage across the arctic

Most tire shops keep used tires Mac.. I roll with 4 duratracs and one used tire for my spare.. REALLY used ;)

Most people that run 5 of the same tires will rotate the spare in every oil change..

Kellys Xterra will be running 4 of one and one used of the other.. Im pretty sure I know what tire that will be now.. :)

Just remember if your on the trails you need to keep the same size spare.. running a smaller tire in 4wd can do damage to the truck

I believe you can get any brand tire as long its the same dimensions as all other 4 to keep your rear end gears in sync when driving.

So if I got BFG 33"s and wore all 4 out but kept my spare BFG, and decided to get 33" Duratracs instead of getting BFGs again, I'd still be okay with BFG spare since I will get a new Duratrac but the BFG will just be enough to get me home and swap it out once I get new tire replaced and put BFG back in the spare hole.

Keep an eye out on craigslist... single spares come up all the time. That's what I do... wait for the right one to pop up. You might get lucky and find a matching one.

Yeah, I was definitely meaning the same size spare. I had no intentions of running a smaller spare than the other four. I've already got one option and am gonna keep an eye out on c-list as well as mention it to the tire shop.

What's wrong with doing a 5-tire rotation? That's what I do. I have 5 285/75/16s and when I rotate the tires, I use all 5 in a rotational pattern. That way all 5 tires have mostly even wear and it causes them to last longer.

I use the 5 tire rotation. But I also have 5 matching rims. I thought about that when I bought my rims. I did not have a tire carrier at the time but new I was going to get one.

If I only have 4 matching rims I would guy 4 new tires and find a used one the same size on C-list, Used from tire shop. In the end if its out of site it does not mater if the rim or tire matches the 4 normal one.

I had the stock spare on the rack a while. But, I also carry a portable compressor and tire plugs. I figure I'd patch the tire and keep all 4 on the ground. If I really got stuck and had a total blow out then I'd toss the stock size spare on and limp to the nearest town. In the past 12 years I've been driving I've only run a spare once when the tire was being replaced at a tire shop do to sidewall damage. I've picked up nails came out a parking lots to find the tire low but plugs took care of that in a matter of minutes. Just ask the guys at gonemoab I had a tire that split a sidewall on a rock. I had it plugged before it even went flat and drove all the trails the rest of the week on it. But, the piece of mind of a full size spare is nice on vacation especially with rare sizes which have to be ordered. Eventually my OCD drove me nuts MUST have MATCHING spare! After a while I located two matching bfg a/t used tires on Craiglist for $10 each in great shape.

Mac, MississippiGal and I both have spares that are different brands. We got our Destination M/Ts at Hibdon Tires and just asked the manager if they had any other cheap 33" MTs laying around. In both cases they had some off-brand mud tires piled in in their storage area that we got for really cheap.

I have the same set up. I picked up my spare from a used tire shop for $30. Figured it didn't really matter since its just the spare.

I am hoping to get 5, to keep them on a rotation, but at the same time, with out a spare carrier, I don't know where I am going to put the 33..

My spare rides on the roof. Its ugly, catches on branches and is a PIA to get on and off. But its up there if I need it. Once I whip up spare tire carrier for my bumper it will get moved there.

you need to keep in mind that your tire on the back is going to be exposed to so much sun though and may dry rot around the edges. once a tire hits 6 years old, rather it's used or not, the structural integrity is completely gone. if I were you I may put a tire cover on it.
also, I am doing 33s next time, and will gladly keep my 31" spare lol. idc. just swap the spare to the front and call her good!

Why does not everyone do a 5 tire rotation. This way all the tires get used the same.

So much this it's not even funny.

I can't count the number of times I've seen a Heeper that bought all five tires that match and the 4 on the road are almost dead and the spare has NEVER seen the pavement.

What's the point of having a full size spare if you never rotate it in?

Agreed, the only time I could see just letting the spare chill is if you just buy a cheapo of the same size.
