Okay people, want to recommend me a holster? Brand, model, or both would be great. My dad has a Taurus 1911 (inexpensive but works fantastic and very durable) that we take when we go backpacking for protection. I've yet to find a decent way of carrying it and have decided i'd like a tactical holster. Due the the convenience if it being placed in a spot like this and the lack of having one around my waist (backpack support strap goes there) I'm looking for something like this:

... however not so "heavy duty" per say. Lighter and not so big. Anyone have any recommendations? We also need one for a HK .40 - I think it is a USP but I'll have to double check.

Have you ever used a drop leg holster before? They have a tendency to get hung up on objects you are walking past, mostly door frames but I imagine tree's would be the same. Is it legal for you to OC where you backpack?

If you are hellbent on the drop leg check out the Safariland 6004 and 6005 tactical holsters. I think you would be better off with an IWB holster under the backpack waste strap but that's just me.

Opeb carry is legal, I may even carry at ruger redhawk in .44 mag. But it's heavier than I'd like. The trail is fairly beaten and after too long I will be above the timberline, so snagging on trees won't be a worry.

My dad and I have a drop-leg for our pair of 1911s and we both agree that serpas are cumbersome. They are, however, very secure IMO.

Have you considered a Kydex holster? I know a guy here that custom builds them for a pretty good price.

thanks! I suppose a drop-hip wouldn't be completely necessary, but I dont' see what else i can use that would work. My backpack hip straps are padded and i've tried attaching a holster to them, but then when i'm walking my arms can't swing and makes for it to be very awkward. a chest holster would be nice but i also have a strap across my chest and plane to keep my dslr there. From what i've read many people dislike the drop hip because of the 'look'. not necessary functionality.

Who cares what it "looks" like...that's one thing I hate about this niche. If it's painted black, OD green, or desert/coyote, it's automatically deemed "tactical."

Anyway, if it will serve a FUNCTIONAL purpose for you, then that's all that matters. I like the one I posted because I can toss it in the washing machine and clean it, and it has some REALLY nice rubber retainers built into the straps to keep the straps from chafing.

I'll take your word for it! That's exactly what I was looking for, someone that had experience with one that had feedback and could recommend it or another. Thank you Nismo!

No problem. I bought the UTG one because it was cheap, but it's actually turned out to be pretty awesome. One of the better purchases I've made for my kit.
