Running board lights

My brother in law and I have decided that we're going to put LEDs right behind the front fender well and in front of the rear fender well...any recommendations on lights? I'd like to keep it to LEDs so I'm not drawing too much on my stock battery. He has some on his 08OR, but they don't work for some reason.

Ideas?

I want to do this too, once I get my sliders installed. I'm going to trip a relay off the interior lights so that when I unlock the doors with the remote, the lights for the steps will be illuminated along with the interior.

This is exactly what I want to do..

J, any idea how the wiring would work and what it would consist of?

I tapped into the dome light trigger wire here:

I have a 2nd gen but I would be more then happy to lend a hand. My lights come on with the key fob when I unlock it and off when I lock it.

This is how I would wire them. Obviously, there will be more than one light so you would just run each light in series and go to a single ground. To be honest, LED's draw so little amperage that you could probably do away with the relay, but for safety's sake, I always do stuff like this with a relay.

*extends hand*

I've gotten the lights, all the wiring (including the wiretap), the FSM, and JE's diagram above. I've never tapped into wiring like this before, so I really don't have a clue what I'm doing.

Now that I've thought this through a bit more, I may install a switch between the Dome light source and the relay, so I can turn the dome lights on without the outside light being, if need be. And I'm thinking a installing the lights themselves in the bottom of the sideview mirrors instead of under the rockers.

Reviving this one because it's time to do it..

Anybody know where the Smart Entrance Control Unit is? Need to find it so I can trace the right wire back

Dunno where or what that is. I haven't gotten around to doing mine yet, but now that it's starting to cool off a bit and Jessica is starting a new job, it might be time to get all of my little projects checked off my list. I'd be happy to help if I were in your neck of the woods.

I would imagine you could tap into the dome light wires in the same place that macguyvermedic did his. The wires have to run up one of the A-pillars. All you need to know is what color the wires are, and you can pull the dome down from the headliner to see that.

Stab in the dark: Driver's knee well, on the left side of the body. There are three connectors on it, and I think it's tucked in behind the fuse panel and above the Tranny computer.

Update, With pic!!

This is under the steering wheel. OBD port ID'd to give you some bearing. Fuse panel is off the page to the top.

This is a cool idea. Can't wait to see what you come with. I'd like to do something to illuminate a 360 degree area around the X but not have lights sticking out all over the place. I'd like to do this for when I'm out in the woods at night or something.

It won't be 360*, just ~160* (maybe a little less once mounted) on each side. The lights will go on the frame rail just below the door hinges.
