New problem

Loud noise intermittent on startup. Lights flicker inside and out when it happens. Now the really weird one. Turned the truck off and took out the key and it kept running! It did that twice! Then on the third try it turned off. I restarted it. The noise was gone and all seemed normal. It turned off just fine. Any ideas what is going on? Alternator?

These intermittant problems really hack me off. Just went out and tried it again. Ran fine. The sound was not present. The lights did not flicker. It shut off when I told it to. Still trying to place what that loud screeching could be. It is of interest that it is associated with the flickering lights.

That sounds like a timing issue, especially given that it stays running after the ignition is turned off.

The sound it was making was like sheet metal scraping. Kind of like the fan on an alternator scraping the alternator itself. I'll take it to a reputable local shop this week.

Definitely. Might have seized briefly. Definitely wouldn't try to crank it anymore until you pull the dizzy and make sure it's not stripping teeth.

I'll call the shop tomorrow. Don't have time to deal with it myself right now. Glad this is the initial consensus though. I was having nightmares about the engine.

Got it to the shop. They will look at it in the morning. It is still doing all of the above things about 50% of the time. The rest it acts normal.

Ok according to the shop the battery connection to the starter was loose. It was then bumping another terminal on the starter causing the starter to remain engaged. They also found a front O2 sensor that they said was completely dead. They adjusted the battery cable and tightened it down, and are replacing the O2 sensor. hopefully that will fix the issue.

Lol Me either. I have driven it a lot the past coupe of days with no issues other than the rattling heat shield. So glad that was all it was.
