Motor knocking

Just bought my first Xterra it's a white 2000 4wd but the only problem is that it's knocking. Does anyone who's had experience with this know how much it typically runs to fix. *also my fathers a mechanic*

What engine? How many miles? Have you had the codes pulled yet? There are several things that could cause knocking, and it's more expensive to throw parts at it if you don't have a specific area to focus on

The timing is too advanced typically...so, it could just need a tune up....but, what's the mileage on it, and, has the timing belt been changed?
