What are you after coyotes? Wolves? People?j/k
Keep us posted on the build there are plenty of gun nuts here. My self included of course due to the purchase of my bumper I don't think new guns are in the cards for me this year unless I get some kind of a raise.

I'm using it to hunt zombies.

It'll actually be used to hunt hogs and deer. The 6.8SPC is a great hunting round with trajectory and velocity similar to a .308 for the first 400 or so yards. I'll build a .308 eventually but the costs are kind of prohibitive right now -- plus a pocket full of 6.8 weighs less than a pocket full of .308.

I plan to use a Palmetto State Armory lower I already have, then order
  • ARPerformance 18" barrel
  • Rainer Arms forged upper w/o forward assist
  • Viking Tactics 13" Extreme Battle Rail
  • Magpul MIAD grip
  • Magpul PRS or PRS2 butt stock
  • Two stage trigger (can't decided between Wilson Combat or Timney)
  • Undecided scope

Or course some or all this can change. I'll use this thread to chronicle things -- building a 6.8SPC is identical to building a 5.56 minus the barrel and bolt, but even those attach the same. It'll be a slow build and I'll buy items as money is freed or if I come across a great deal on new or slightly used parts.

I will, just have the lower right now. Going to the gun show this weekend to see if there are any deals and to just walk around and enjoy the vintage stuff. Was going to use my tax return on this, but the truck needs some TLC.

And for anyone going the BYOR route, I highly recommend Palmetto State Armory for their lowers. Their roll mark is simple and small and their prices are usually right -- grabbed three on Black [Rifle] Friday for $56 each! The holes for the trigger guard run a bit small but some lube and slight pressure makes it easier (that's what she said?).

Yeah, I want a 6.8 eventually too. My M&P15 is for sale right now to make room for it.

Sell?! Make room?! NOOO! Those words should never be uttered around guns. :)

Why not just by a Stag 6.8 upper and slap it on the M&P lower? I hear Stag makes pretty good uppers for the cost and have a lifetime warranty.

I don't want to sell it at all. But my wife is between jobs right now and the savings are going to run short soon. I'm going to sell the rifle before that happens and while I have a few buyers interested. I can always get another somewhere down the line.

OK, that's fair. Do what you gotta do.

ARs aren't demanding the price they used to, but it's become such a mainstream thing now that you can always find a buyer. I am 100% OK with that -- the more people that own one, the less they'll be referred to as "assault rifles".

so....help me out here....if you're going 6.8SPC to avoid the cost of .308 ammo....have you looked at the cost of 6.8SPC right now? the cheapest per round package that cheaperthandirt.com has for 6.8SPC is 17.55/20rds or $0.88/rd cheapest they have on .308 was 7.39/20rds or $0.37/rd.

I know you'll build the 6.8 cheaper than building a full AR10/LR308, but, the price per round is WAY cheaper on .308 than on 6.8SPC...
