Larger gas tank

After a good weekend, here's the bottom of my gas tank.

Yes, I know I need a real skid. That's not the issue. I'm thinking about replacing the tank. Is there a larger capacity option that anyone knows of? My other thought is to get a new tank and cut and weld a 2" vertical extension on it all the way around. Because with the body lift, I've got an extra 2" of gap between the frame and the body. And given the size of the tank, 2" could mean an extra gallon or so. I'd actually have to do maths to get the numbers correct. Though that does raise issues with the level sender and maybe the fuel pump.

Thoughts?

It sounds like a lot of work for an extra gallon or two?

It could be more than that of course, but, what would help is knowing how many gallons you wanted to end up with.

A fuel CELL is probably the best way to add capacity, as they're safer, easier to plumb, and give you more options overall for placement.

For example, if, with a 2" BL, you have more room, but, the current low position is impacting the trail...it might be better to tuck the tank up another 2" out of the way, instead of growing it upwards, etc.

When I was looking at where I'd put OBA tanks, it occurred to me that gas capacity could go in the same locations....and fuel cells can be bolted in almost anywhere typically depending upon their shape/volume.

And so forth.

When I started looking at a larger fuel tank for the stock area. Pretty much I realized a custom tank was the only way. $$$$

I know i'm 2nd gen. But I have a few tanks I found that would fit the spare tire area but that means you will really need a good skid plate for that area. Most of them are the same size or smaller then a stock tank so I would recommend doing a second tank. In reality it is just easier to carry a Jerry can then dealing with all of this.

What about doing a Pathfinder gas tank swap? I am looking at doing it next year. It fits where the spare tire used to go underneath the hatch area. It may be quite a bit of work, but they are 15 gallon tanks. I know a couple of people have done it. Plus, it moves it out of harms way and I am sure a skid could easily be fabbed up to protect it even more. Just a thought.

The orginal pathy tanks were 21 gallons... not OEM replacement units..

I have something in the works other than what is in this conversation... can't let the cat out of the bag quite yet...

I'm also looking at doing the pathy thank. But I am hoping to add it as a second tank to really extend my range. But now I also have to see what Gramps is doing.

Watch, Gramps is going to be throwing a Pathy tank in the rear and 4 linking it... If you don't get it done before next summer, I may beat you to it!

I have no need for another 4 link rig. I'm happy with the suspension that is on my Xterra.

I also have a spare under than back end that is going to stay put...

Casper knows what I am up to... and it will probably be a bit before I can get to it. This whole idea has been part of the design throughout the build.

However, looking forward to checking out your build thread.

I KNOW you know I meant gasoline, but, I still think that's damn funny....especially because you gave the percents.
