Hi-lift jack roof rack mount

Hi, I had a question about these. So I was searching the web and found a great idea on a very cheap and easy mount that you can hook around your roof rack. The problem is, and what I'm wondering is, how the hell do you guys put that up there lol these jacks are heavy as hell and it's pretty damn hard to hoist it up and keep it at a level so you can do whatever you need to do to put your mount on/in your jack. And then I'm wondering if the mount will stay like that bouncing around or even just driving on the highway.

Also, I was wondering what the difference between the way people mount them. Some mount it like they do the shovels (this is the kind of mount I have, not yet set up). I have a kind of steel clamp that goes around the roof bars, and then one that goes around the jack. Then I see some people have some kind of bar that'll go in between the holes in the jack (which looks pretty neat). Are both pretty stable? Is one more stable than the other and is one easier to put on than the other (I suppose the one that goes THROUGH the hole would be easier).

The reason I like to mount my stuff on the roof rack are for a couple reasons. 1. If it gets muddy/dirty, or if the item is pretty heavy, I like to keep it away from some of my important items so it's not damaging anything. 2. I think it looks pretty badass lol 3. In some situations, it might be easier to grab something from the outside, rather than having to go through the inside of the vehicle.

Mine just bolts to the roof rack that I built, But I have also built a set of clamps that go around the stock rails and then the lift is bolted to them. a really good exhaust clamp is a great start to build the clamps off of.

I do not like the idea of mounting the jack on the racks.. Sure it gives your rig a cool look but on more than one occasion I have seen people drop the jack on the roof and denting it.

I saw where somebody mounted it to the back of the rear seats using Nuts, bolts with the knobs and JBweld. It can fit a 48" hi-lift across.

This is what I might end up doing whenever I finally get one.

I don't like the idea of it being on the roof either..I went with the rear bumper, but in your case if you don't have a tire carrier I would just put it in the cargo area. Like Drbandkgb said, it keeps it out of the elements.

It's only 30lbs!
haha I'm not weak I swear! It was probably because I was trying to hold the damn thing up for 10 minutes while I try screwing the clamp around the bar. It have it up and it seems to be very stable.

Well, if the rear tire carrier wasn't around $2,000 then I would definitely purchase one. I used to carry it on the rear seats, but it was damaging my seats and also the interior of the doors (damage wasn't too bad but enough to make me not want it there). And I have a lot of equipment/gear/tools in the back that won't allow me to put it back there. As of now, I have it on the roof rack, finally.

I looked at other people's and nothing fit my needs, so I came up with my own: 2 muffler clamps, a Loc-Rac, and a bolt to go through the other clamp.

I wanted something that I could lock, but also needs to clear my RTT.

I can take more pics if you wish. Even easier right now since I took off my Hi-Lift last week and haven't put her back on yet.

Having a blank and looking the loc-rac's name on their site, I found this in their accessories page:

Yea, I've seen a ton of actual mounts made for hi-lift jacks, just didn't want to pay $60-$80 for pretty much 2 clamps. I've made my own anyways and it seems to be extremely durable. It hasn't moved an inch since I put it on.

Ya i know exactly what you mean! Ive been suggested against putting it on the roof but I like it there. With the cover, I just keep it well lubed with white grease and wrap it in a garbage bag in the winter. The Hi-Lift goes on and off quite well, and the mounts been on for 3 years now and hasnt moved at all.

Well I over-exaggerated then sorry. But from what I've read, you need to have a reinforced bumper to have that carrier on, so I guess if you add that, and the carrier, then it'll be near 2k.

I don't think you would reach that price even if you went custom. I am talking to a guy about having a bumper that wraps around, ties into the sliders, and has a tire carrier with jerry can holders, and I am still priced out at ~800 bucks.

I used to have my Hi-Lift mounted to the Roof Rack with Hi Lift mounts , but moved it under the rear seat so I can mount my DepHep rack. A 48" Hi-Lift just fits under the rear seat, doesn't rattle or vibrate and is out of the way but easy to reach. Best of all, this option costs nothing unless you want to add a bolt/wingnut or a Quick Fist to keep the jack from shifting (although the rear seat does a good job of that).

If anyone is interested in my Hi Lift mounting clamps for the Gen 2 roof rack , let me know. They are in good shape and the only reason I'm no longer using them is that they won't work with a 48" jack and a DepHep rack (a 60" jack would work). $35+shipping, which is what I paid last June. Time to pass them forward. [Edit: Holding these for 21SF until 3/7/14.]

Flimsy? Surely you jest.

The Hi Lift mounts are machined from inch-thick high strength aluminum with stainless steel hardware. They are rock solid. I would still be using mine if I were not installing a DepHep rack.

What length do you have and in what position does it fit in the back?
before I had my tire carrier I could put my 48" jack in the cargo area horizontally and it fit welll. I had it infront of my sub between the bump out spaces where the rear speakers are.

Look. They LOOK flimsy. I'm sure if they were flimsy they wouldn't be selling them. I'm still considering buying one if the future. I like how easy it is to unlock/lock, compared to what I have.
