Help with Tires for normal driving

Guys,

I don't off-road at all - just pavement. I am in need yet again of replacing my tires early. I have the Pro-4X, 2015, but have had 3 other Xterra's since 2001. I'm on my third set of Falken WildPeaks. They're great tires for about the first 18 months, and then i start sliding around roundabouts, and spinning out from a stop when the pavement is wet. I tried a more "car" tire, but was spinning if there was even a hint of pebbles, sand, dirt of rocks on the dry pavement. I paid $1200 for the set of Falken's and in 18 months (~20K) i'm again looking to replace them, as they're just not safe. To look at them though, they look brand new. I don't know if it's the torque, the weight, etc., of the X, but I can't find something that works. I'm a very safe driver and do not have a lead foot. So, I'm not speeding or accelerating hard at intersections, etc.

I read a couple of older posts with Hankook's that someone said was good for regular road driving, but they bought Dynapro AT2's which have been replaced by the Dynapro AT2 Xtreme. I don't see any posts on this. I don't know if that is one to try - the tread pattern looks more "on-roadish" than "off-roadish" if that makes sense.

Does anyone out there just drive their X on pavement, and have any recommendations for me (stock size)?

Much appreciated!!

I would never buy another set of Hankook tires myself.

I'm a fan of Cooper Discoverers. I had the P265/70/R16s on my X stock and it did great. It is a top heavy SUV so spinning the inside tire in corners when you're on the gas is not uncommon.

You might find a P series tire more suitable VS the LT series since you're not running heavy or putting the tires in rough locations.

What didn't you like about your Hankook, and what did you like about the discoverers? You say it past tense, as if you dont run them anymore. What do you run now?

I ran a set of Firestone Destination AT tires and really liked how they handled pavement. Pressure was at 35, regular rotation, could do light off-road at 20psi. I just wanted/needed something with a stiffer sidewall and more plies for towing and better off-roading, so I went for the Falkens.

The Hankooks we've run in the past wear terribly and are noisy.

I have Nitto G1 Terra Grapplers on my Xterra right now. They're heavy and loud and aren't wearing as good as the Discoverers.

The last set of Discoverers I had on my Xterra were the LT285/75/16 Load E. I put over 50k on a set of 5, regularly rotated, and sold them as runnable tires. They were just worn enough I wanted to replace them for offroad use.

I drove my Xterra from VA to Colorado, Georgia, Ohio, and anywhere I needed to go in any weather conditions without worry.

But, with all that said, you're the first person I've ever heard complain about the Wild Peaks tires. Which Wild Peaks tread pattern do you have?

I would second Terry’s advice and put P rated tires on it The soft sidewalls are much better for handling and way lighter. If you do LT don’t go higher than a C. You only need D or E for carrying heavy loads (towing etc) or for sidewall strength to reduce punctures. The E rated tires I have are also beasts to change compared to P tires. Really heavy
