Gasket vs. Gasket sets

I've got to change the head gaskets due to a leak. Any one change them yet? Did you just buy/change the head($15.00 ea,) or did you get the Gasket set ($170). Debating getting the set so I'll have them for the header mod and just change everything in the spring.

Stick to good brands the tuner crowd has found ishino, Victor and OEM the best quality. Felpro, and ebay brands are the ones they say to look out for do to poor quality. Though people on here swear by them.

What side is it leaking from? I'm curious as I have a leak as well on the right head near the firewall.

Many recommend doing both as you have you engine apart anyways. Like anythig old it eventually wears out and needs replacement.

Don't know where the leak is it's internal. I found antifreeze in the threads of the oil cap, engine steam out the tailpipe has increased and the engine's warming up quicker even tho it's colder outside and there's no leaks on the gound.

Autozone sells Felpro but it's the set. They don't want to sell the single gaskets and make you order 1 then make you wait wait for the second gasket to be delivered to the warehouse to replace the first one before they will order the second. The process sounded odd to me.

Gotta wait til spring anyway to break down the engine so I'll just prolly get the whole set from Nissan. What about the form-a-gasket stuff in the tube?

If it calls for liquid gasket (it doesn't) then use it. If it calls for a metal or rubber gasket, then use that. Using liquid gasket where not called for can gum up the works.

Decided to go OEM. Dealership said they needed the VIN in order to get the right ones since there seems to be several sets depending on the engine build date. Seemed logical but I did only speak to one dealership. Ballpark cost he said would be $200 - $250.

IIght... It's crunch time for me. I just don't have the time to do the gaskets myself. Anyone know the going rate for a stealership to do it? Going to start calling around for prices. Sad day in Mudville.

Dealer #1 wants $2060.56 parts and labor ... REALLY!?!?!?!
Dealer #2 wants $72 per head and $26 per valve = $196 parts. Labor - Would not answer call.
Dealer #3 wants $2000 just for labor and wanted me to replace the heads as well (at an additional cost) then add the price for the gaskets to that.

Guess I'd better make the time.

Dealer number 3 has definitely lost their mind with that labor quote. There's no way it should take them around 20 hours to do the job.

Yeah it could possibly take me that long too but I'm not charging anyone $100.00 an hour for my slow poke time.

Conveniently I just ran into one of my customers who has a labor guide he can access with his phone. Labor time for the complete job which includes replacing all gaskets and valve seals, checking/decking the heads, flushing and filling the oil and coolant and other minor things is 13 hours. He mentioned that if you're anywhere remotely close to timing belt service this would be the time. It shouldn't add anything to labor since it has to come off and go back on anyway. Also if you haven't done a tune up recently it's much easier to change the plugs while the intake is off.

Timing belt/tensioner/water pump all done last year. I did change the plugs and wires except #6 in the fall. So @ $100 +/-/hr. it's looking like $1300 according to the guide. Now if I could get a copy of that to have in hand when I speak to a stealership, that would be great.

Can get a entire used JDM engine with 50,000 miles on it right now on ebay for $1200 shipped. With no worries of did I do it right.

The problem with replacing the engine is that too takes time plus I'd have to do it in my driveway needing additional tools (engine hoist, etc.) or pay the labor to remove the old and install the new doubling the labor.

At this point the best cost efficient solution would be to spend the $200 on the 4 gaskets, and do the job myself.

Second would be to get the guide quote data in hand and speak to a shop I've spoken to before about doing some work.

Last would be the used engine.

It's all about time, money and patience.
