Exhaust pipe heat shields

I am sure there others out who agree that those heat shields that are on the xterra as they get old start to make a lot of rattling and clanking especially when they start to rot and get loose. I was thinking if cutting all mine off only the portion that is on the underside of the truck. I know they serve a purpose but has anyone run without them and if not how about a heat fiber wrap to protect the underside of he truck. What have you guys done? I have new piping from the Y split all the way to the back. Its from the Y split to the bottom of the headers where the noise comes from.

I talked to a muffler shop and they said just cut them off, not required. There are additional heat shields attached to the bottom side of the frame just above the pipes. I'm loosing mine. Bring it over I would be more than happy to do the chop, that's as far as I would go. Doing what I did nope not again, wayyy too much work. Would never do it again but it sure is fun to drive. Everyone says he I love your Tacoma!
