Engine Swap.

So, I've heard that a swap from a Q45 IS possible. Does it depend on what year?

Also, since im already here, WHICH engines are actually possible to swap into the X. And would you have to have the Tranny as well.

Purely hypothetical situations....for now. ;)

I think the Q45 v8 would fit....I mean if they can get them into a 240......

Off the top of my head, engine, bellhousing, possibly transmission (or a different one all together to get the right length to the transfer case), full wiring harness, computer, and a LOT of late nights and pulled out hair.

I'd love to do something like that to give the X more power....I think its just above and beyond what I'm willing to do. You know?

Well, I've got the chance to buy a 1994 Q45 for $995. It runs, but its the nastiest looking car i've ever seen. So I'll effectively have everything I would need.

I just dont want to shell out the money, and then not be able to do anything with it.

But it IS possible to keep the stock tranny?

If the dimensions are right and you can get a pilot bearing in the back of the V8 to match the input shaft of the transmission, AND get a bellhousing to mate the two...I'd say so.

The only thing I am afraid of, is the transmission.

That would put a damper on things if its not possible AT ALL to link the engine to the tranny, because obviously I dont want a 2 wheel drive X...

NO OFFENSE TO THOSE WHO HAVE EM. :D

I know a VH45 fits in the back of an X, not sure about the front ;)

Nissan autos use the same bellhousing to trans bolt pattern, so theoretically you could put the VH45's bellhousing (RE4R03A) on a 4wd automatic VG33 trans (RE4R01A), the question is would the trans hold up. Or vice versa, use the VH45 bellhousing and trans, but swap the tailhousing for a 4wd one so a tcase can bolt up (again theoretical). Would work the same way for a manual, use the Z32 tranny with a mazworx/xcessive adapter plate and swap the tail housing for a 4wd one and use the trucks shifter location on top of the trans instead of behind it.

I really need to take some measurements to see if it will fit in the engine bay of an X. i've been stalled out on working on the 240sx, i'm trying to get back to it so its running soon.

So, THEORTETICALLY speaking.

It's possible?

Anything is possible with enough time and money.

I've pondered a bit on dropping the vh45 in the X a while back. I came up with needing a bellhousing adaptor and a flywheel made up... At least on the manual trans, I'd assume the auto would be easier.

Issue your going to have is the sector shaft on the steering box. Someone tried to drop it in a early pathy. Didnt fit. Also consider how little clearance there is under the engine with the front axle.

It would be interesting to see what you'd do about motor mounts. It might be possible that the mounts required to clear the oil pan to front axle might raise it up high enough that you'd need a body lift to clear. That would be one of those trial and error things. And a little bit of tilt on the drive line wouldn't hurt so bad. The U-joints in the driveshafts should be able to compensate for it.

So what is being thought out now by me and a few friends is to go rescue one of the X's that I stole a few parts from at the local junkers. And then completely experiment with that.

As I cant exactly afford to have a lot of down time of my X, and I could fully focus on getting the swap done right and not rush.

Also, I could do whatever I wanted to that rig as it would be my literal toy.

Already got a name for it, Frankenstein.

Does anyone know how reliable the VH45's are? Like how many miles I should steer clear of? Or would I be better off rebuilding one?

Nissan engines seem to have no problem making 200k. A quick wiki search says 93 and older used plastic timing chain guides that were prone to breaking, causing oil pump damage. Starting in 94 they had metal faced guides.

If it were me, I'd have it bored if its over 175k just to make sure its in great shape.

When I bought mine they were pretty easy to find some low mileage ones, the yard I got mine from had 5 with under 120k miles. Timing chain guides and injectors are about the only things to watch for, both are easily replaced though. I went through mine and replaced all the gaskets and seals except the head gaskets.

You can always make a different oil pan for axle clearance as well, the Z32's guys have been doing this when they swap in the VH.

We need Cyclemut to chime in on this one - he was talking about it at goneMOAB like it wasn't that big of a deal...and he would know

edit - as Eric mentioned above...

I enjoy reading. And I enjoy learning. And I enjoy engines.

I enjoy reading and learning about engines.

And I NEVER meant to just dive into this project. Thats why I posted in here. I'd like to know or at least have an idea of EVERYTHING that I could run into, everything I need, and be well prepared.
