CV Joint Problem.

Just installed my Warn Manuals, tried to put it in 4wd, and all I hear is this clicking ticking nonsense from my drivers side. Put it back in 2wd, call my stepdad to come over and see if he could help me figure it out. He said it's probably bad cv joints. Which is just what i need when nxm is so close.

So anyone know sites or the part numbers that I need? I guess im just going to have to replace the CV Joints and hope that's what the problem was. Any help or counter idea of what it could be would be nice. Thanks in advance.

Go to Advance auto... 69.00.. Only issue is taking the hubs apart off the spindle and re inserting the new Axel.. If you hear clicking then its a bad axel..

There are a few good videos on youtube about this

You are saying.. That my axle could be bad? O.O

The CV is the front axel... The Warns kick in harder vs the old ALH.. most likely the old hubs were broken and never worked so this would be why you are just now noticing.
Any rips in the boots?

Sounds worse than it is man.

Though I haven't dealt with changing the half-shafts, I've seen the videos and it isn't a huge job. Like Dave said, hardest/worst part is having to disassemble the hubs to remove the shaft. Not too bad.

After helping my mechanic do my front end work, I feel confident in the above statements and that I could do it myself. Find yourself some YouTube videos and check 'em out, you'll see.

Just go to advance and ask for a front Axel/CV for the Xterra... Its one size fits all.. 69.99 is what I paid.. and look for online coupons or maybe you get mailed some..
No core charge..

Oh and do not over tighten the bolts on the diff.. they will break..

Its not a hard bob ata ll... The warn hubs were harder to me... Oh and this would be a great time to re pack the bearings

You can do them without taking the hubs all of the way off. As long as the snap ring is off, the shaft will slide out the back of the hub assembly.

Replacing a front axle is one of the easiest, all though dirtiest things that you can do in your driveway.

I need to do one of mine, and tomorrow might just be the day.

its very hard for a CV to just go bad with out a rip or tear in the boots, unless you are lifted so high that they are no longer in proper running angle.

most cases you start to hear any CV go bad when turning sharply, but for 1st gen you can only test this in 4wd because in 2wd drive and the hubs unlocked they front drivetrain does not turn.

(just my 2 cents for this)

Its just like a ball joint or anything else. Eventually the lubrication breaks down parts wear out. The few that I've had that went bad wore out at the diff side. Lot of rotational slop in the joint. They aren't terrible to swap out. Can usually find them for $40 on ebay.

Well, I could only look at them so much with the tires still on, but from what I saw they seemed fine. They are at an angle though. But I only have a pml.

When I turn sharply whether in 2wd or 4wd, i always hear popping and noises, and i know its from somewhere near that area.

Cv would be rotational popping *clackety *clackety clack noises as your rounding a turn. The sound would be consistent with speed.

If you hear a *Bonk while turning hard its likely just the steering stops contacting. Especially if in 2wd as the CVs are disengaged from rotating entirely.

There should be one......but I can tell you, take off the outer section of the hub. Remove the snap ring from the axle. Unbolt the CV from the axle. Remove by pulling CV out from the back of the brake rotor. Install new one.

When my CV Axle went bad, I had a major tear in the rubber seal and lots of clicking (while moving in 4WD), finally it broke - (same day) when you grab the Axle can you move it - it's never good if you can move them. I had both sides replaced at a local shop in town for $350 all in. Was the ticking there before the Warn Hub install?

Yeah ticking has been there for a while. Originally I thought it was the hubs not engaging cause they were shot or something. Hence why I bought the Warns.

When I first heard the ticking I was in 4WD in dirt and I also noticed my steering wheel rocked (slightly) back and forth. I kept checking to make sure the wheels weren't going to fall off. It Broke (but still not visible) completely within a couple more hours of wheelin.

Good luck with the repairs I hope it solves the problem.

And then complete failure means?....

I can as atleast still drive? Or will they snap?

I was able to drive home without issues. As you notice the sound goes away once you go back to 2WD. The part that was difficult was I was pretty far back in the off road park when it broke. So I would change before going out again.

To summarize it up, If you can, change it out before you go. It will be no fun to have to take a day away from wheeling to fix your vehicle on the trail or even at base camp (even though it makes a great story normally). If you can't, go ahead and risk it. Just come prepared.
