I am about to replace my bcm and was wondering if it had to be reprogrammed?

All the modules on the 2nd gen have to be programmed. I think the IPDM is the only exception.

Is this something I can do or do I need to take it to the dealer?

You likely can do it with a home Consult subscription, but for the one time you're going to do it, just go to the dealer

You think it would be safe to reinstall the old one long enough to get it to the dealer, or can I drive down with the replacement in it? I live about 25 miles away from the dealer

I don't know if it'll run with an unlinked BCM or not. You might have to install and tow it down or it may honestly be cheaper/easier to pay them to install/program in one go

Yeah, if you install the BCM yourself, you'll have to have a Consult to make it work.
