Bad Head gasket

Here's the dilemma.

So, Sunday I was driving back up to school. The highway started to climb and next thing I knew I saw the temp gauge was climbing rapidly. I though what ever I'll take it easy and pull off on the next exit. (I'm used to it getting somewhat hot with the weight and 33's.) Pull off, pop the hood to let it cool and noticed coolant all over the passenger wheel well. I started freaking out (I've been super stressed with finishing school and such and it was Sunday) There were limited shops open.

Limped it to the first shop Monroe brake and muffler. Took it in, looked at it, topped off the coolant. He said couldn't find the leak and it was holding fluid. But he said sounds like the bearings were bad in the water pump. (replaced at 98k) I drove it around a little and it seemed to be staying at temp.

50/50 shot, so I started back heading to school. 17miles later, heading up a steep incline again on the highway, starts to climb again. I pull off at the top, and just see coolant dripping from the passenger side. I limp it back to a Sears this time. (15miles back) and get it in just before they closed. 4 guys were all around the engine bay trying to figure out the problem. They said it was the radiator. So gave them the go to fix it the next day.

My dads friend is a master mechanic for ford. So he told us to have them pressure test the system. Apparently it held twice. SO, sears could not find the problem. And so, the X gets brought to Nissan.

Now Nissan said its a blown head gasket. So now we are trying to figure out what to do. My dad's friend is saying drop a rebuilt 3.3 in. I feel like trying to tackle the project myself. I'm stressed out trying to finish my semester and figure this out.

So it's going to be around 1600-2000 to have a shop do it. Or I tackle it myself when I get home. I know its ripping most of the engine apart, what else should I replace while I am in there.

Oh and anyone by NY want to assist that would be awesome

Why in the world would you drop a motor in this for a head gasket ?
The HG is a pain to replace but I'm not sure a new motor is the answer..

Now that being said.. If you could get them to quote the motor and re install at the same or cheaper price then dobit

Yeah, if it costs less money to replace the entire long block than the head gasket go for it. Otherwise, just do the head gasket. The only reason to go beyond that is that the coolant was in there so long that it completely trashed the lower end of the motor. Or if running it a high temperature over a long enough timeline warped a head, shaft, or piston.
