Ax Mounting Ideas!!!

I have a yellow Ax and am wanting to mount it in the X for well times when I may need it for camping or wheeling or whatever (making someone disappear lol jk) etc. Any way I would like to see pics of how others may have done this. I really don't want to mount to the rack though because I feel like it would rust and plus people may be more tempted to steal it.

A while back I think Dave mounted a shovel to the inside of his hatch with some quick fists.. i don't see why it wouldn't work for an axe

I am sure I'm one of the few that will think this, but I'm gonna point it out anyway. While I LOVE quick fists, do you REALLY want to trust your life (head staying attached and such) to a piece of rubber holding an ax in place inside your rig should you get in a head on at speed or roll the rig down a hill multiple times????

There's a saying we used in rafting/swift water rescue. "RIG FOR THE FLIP" Meaning always rig your boat for the worst case scenario so you don't lose your lunch, camping gear, dinner and beer should you flip the boat. I use the same mind set in rigging my offroad rig. Ax's, shovel's and such get BOLTED in. I like my head attached.

My old setup:

Worked great and kept them safe. Easy enough to get to and you can fab something close for the stock rack. Rust was never really a problem for the five years they were up there. Yes, they did rust, but only surface rust, so not an issue.

My even OLDER setup. Sorry, as I can't find a really good pic of it, however I used to hold my shovel, ax and highlift in my ski rack. Worked out really great.

Hope that helps with idears. I'll try my best to find a better photo of the ski racks loaded. :)

Cheers,
Josh

I can't say I don't agree with your safety issue I respect it but I don't worry too much about the "what if" factor in life. Life's short why worry plus I mean I like to ride motorcycles and to some that is the most dangerous thing in the world lol. Anyway I do like this mount and I do have a basket on the roof for this to attach to but where did you get this mount??

I have no problem with taking risks, it's part of life and what makes it fun. Pushing the limits can be very exciting. However, if there is a right way to do something then why take a risk you don't have to.

WILL it come loose and kill you or someone you love, probably not. But really why chance it. Another way to put it, a friend had his 37' tire standing up in the garage, mounted on a steal rim. We all do it, really nothing bad about it. Until his new little puppy came in and rolled into it playing. 130++ lb tire fell over onto 11 week old puppy. Still get tears in my eyes thinking about it.

The mounts on the rack are from Gobi CLICK ME :), however lots of places make them, and they really aren't hard to fab up yourself if you have the time.
Yakima Ax Mount (CLICK ME)
S
urco Mount (CLICK ME)
O
ffRoad Warehouse (CLICK ME)

Just a few. Plus, those mounts can give you idears for fabbing your own.

Good luck and sorry for being long winded. Just hate to see something bad happen to good people.

Cheers,
Josh

After seeing some horrific results from very slow speed collisions keeps me strapping everything down. My high lift is bolted to the roof rack, when I have an ax on the roof, I use Thule cable mounts. While I do like quick fists for some things, and I have a set, I don't like them for for anything sharp, or heavy. I have watched them let go when brushed on tree branches.

I lost a cousin a few years ago in a 35 mph accident. Single car, slid into the ditch, loose tool box in the back. When the truck stopped, the tool box came forward and hit him in the back of the head. Left a wife and three kids behind all because of an unsecured load.

I feel like this thread is taking a turn for left field. I never said I disagreed with safety measures I was just stating that I don't limit mounting options to the outside. I don't oppose the outside either.

Sorry, that's probably my fault. Just like to make sure people think of everything before they make a decision that could cause harm. :(

It is coming from the what if part of the statement that you made. There are some what if's that you have to plan for.

Agreed. That is why I I posted again. Nicely put granitex.

People just took it wrong all I meant is I'm not the worrying type but I DO agree with the safety issues from you guys. I like the rack mount but think I would rather have an inside hatch mount just maybe locked down or maybe somewhere else in the hatch locked down.

I have seen people use pet barriers behind the back seat, and attach all kinds of stuff to them, Keeps stuff secure and away from passengers.
