Yet more camp gear questions...portable fire ring/containment pit?

First, thanks for all the help with my total n00b knowledge of camping gear. I'm still kind of stock piling some equipment, and adding to my list of things that I need.

Local ordinance on our section of the beach that we camp at let's you build a camp fire as long as it is contained within a 3 foot diameter "fire container". When I have done basic camping at other local parks...it is the kind of camping where they have pre-made camp lots, a picnic table and a fire ring already for you.

Here, you have to bring your own. This makes it annoying. Any ideas for a creative way to make a semi-portable fire container that can be packed up and taken with you at the end of your stay? No rocks and boulders on the beach, so can't make a natural one. I could just buy a metal bucket, but of course, that is bulky to pack.

Last time my buddies and I camped on the beach, we used a portable charcoal grill after we were done cooking. We just popped a couple of logs in the grill, opened the bottom vents, and took the grate out. The fire did get so hot though...the grill turned bright red hot. Also, my personal camping grill is a gas grill, so it's not really an option.

Any creative ideas? They are not specific as to what a "fire container" is defined as...

I'm thinking something like this, but smaller, and metal would work if I could find one:

It seems like it shouldn't be that hard to get four 3/16" x12" x 24" steel plates and fab up something that will make a 24" x 24" fire pit and fold flat to fit nicely in your vehicle. Fabbers out there please chime in, am I way off base?

First off leave the kids inside the firepit while using it!!!

mudchet, I think your on the right path. I was thinking Maybe even expanded metal. Either 3 hinges and 1 pin or just 4 pins and you have your pit.

All great ideas! I was thinking expanded metal too...As simple as 6 giant nails to use as stakes, attached to two expanded metal strips, and just stake them into the ground in two arcs that connect. No need to even have a pin if you stake them into the ground close enough...

Good idea...I think I will go that route. I have a metal wash tub bucket thing I will use for the time being, but for the future, I want something more compact and portable.

My friend has a Firebox we bring. It's not light or compact. But it works well and can double as a grill. It's homemade and uses pipes that simple screw into some pipe fittings on the bottom. He usually throws this on his hitch mounted basket for transport.
