I did this in 2009... It was challenging... especially welding the thin sheet metal without burning through. You took a different approach.. looks awesome.

and yes.. I got the idea from a toyota forum.. it was a 3rd gen 4runner IIRC

This is your thread though... keep up the good work.

I've been following this thread...

Chopping a vehicle to that extent... is.. destroying something beautiful. It's empowering... and sometimes.. we feel the need to destroy something beautiful.

and I think you know that feeling now...

It's that first initial cut... when the blade pierces the metal of an unmolested vehicle for the first time... Once your through... there's no turning back. That instant surge of adrenaline and total commitment for what's next. It's ****ing awesome... and manly as ****

I dig it...

Steeze I love what you wrote, could not stop laughing!! I love how you put it and I think you have another cool looking truck, its original. When I had that cutting torch in my hand cutting the metal there was something powering through my blood, I think they call it being insane. The only way I would cut this up is knowing that its old, its paid off a long time ago and its value was not much. Basically I was not at a loss. Now as I see it coming together and getting some love bondo I think he is happy. I think its time we call him a name. Egor? Brustus? Don't know, time will tell.

Thanks...

When I cut mine I didn't have kids... it had 180K miles on it and it was paid for... Then life happened and I had to sell it. I think I got like 4500 for it which wasn't bad for what it was. It also sold the day after I posted it..

I recently just paid off my 2nd gen... it's an awesome feeling driving around knowing you own it. I've only got 78K miles on it and it's in great shape. I think in a couple years... once I have some time, money, more tools, and a new DD i'll convince the wife to chop it. I have an idea of how I want to do the 2nd gen chop and I learned a lot from my 1st gen... what not to do at least. It won't be a huge chop... but definitely different.

For me I have a son and wife so I have to balance between work, family and home projects such as the truck and home business. Someday I will buy another xterra but it won't be chopped. You can be the first to chop the 2nd Gen.

Finally got the first coat of bondo on about a week ago. Due to the cool weather I am going to wait a month or more a get back onto the body work. Now its time to get underneath, start prepping the frame and start the suspension components. Will be a long arm LCA's 2" DOM tube, 1/4" wall with a radius arm setup similar to what clayton mfg does. One side frame done, doing the other side on the weekend. :kewl:

Finally got in the long lower control arms, radius arms complete with 2-1/2" Johnny joints, coil springs and coil buckets. Everything was made from scratch except the 2" DOM pipe and joints. The coil guides are not complete and I need to attach the upper shock mounts to the coil buckets.

Next part is doing the leaf over axle conversion which should be fairly easy as I have made new perches and they have bee welded on.

After that the 1 ton steering then track bar.

Well I got the leafs over the axle, swap went well, had to use the stock shackles. Because the increase in vertical distance the drive shaft will need to be lengthened. Its coming out of the transfer case too far. From where it was stock to where it is now the center to center difference is about 7". Drive shaft will have to be modified due to the lift that this truck is getting.

The wheel base stayed the same, leafs were not modified but when I moved the axle vertically down 7" from where it was in the stock position geometry takes effect. The drive shaft is about 2-3" too short. Hope this makes sense. Currently with the truck on blocks, axles off the ground at the ~ distance with 35's on, I measure from the ground to the bottom of the rocker panel about 27". This build will be about 12-14" higher than stock.

What all did you do with the SOA to need a 7" longer driveshaft? I am assuming you lengthened the overall wheel base quite a bit. Anything else? Lift springs maybe?

Cheers,
Josh

I think Josh was wondering why you needed a 7" longer drive shaft, which it sounded like you needed in your first post. Misunderstanding.

This thing is going to look really good, can't wait to see the results.

Sorry misleading you Josh. The 7" is the vertical change from where the axle was to where it is now. At the one end of the rear drive shaft that goes into the transfer case(TC) there is a round plate welded just before the CV joint, nearest the TC. This round plate is typically inside the round protective housing. Sorry don't know the name of this. This round plate should be inside but now its out of the round housing. If I had a picture I would show you. I can actually see the shinny clean shaft that goes into the transfer case.

I guess not. My wife let me do it and it was paid off so I guess your going to have to wait. If I had to do it again the answer is no. Too much work is a one time thing.

The back driveshaft I will get lengthened as well as the front with the front yoke needed to get modified to work with the axle in front. There are a few good companies here in town who do that type of work and balance them.

Finally got some 35" rubber and wheels on. Got four(4) ProComp M&S, 60% tread all for $300. Its nice not having it on blocks!!! Sits really nice, lower arms in, just working on adding in the 1 ton steering which will be over the knuckle. Last night trussed the axle.

Leaf over axle swap went well, will need to remove rear driveshaft and get it longer n balanced. Lots of height in the back, bumper almost comes up to my mid stomach.

Thanks. At least the tires will be good for a year or more until I can afford $300 a tire. Yesterday reamed out the knuckles and new center link tierod. Just need to do the pitman arm then it's ready for the 1.25 diameter dom pipe for the steering.

Finally got around to making the back of the truck. For the last few weeks I have been struggling to find a way to do it in order to make it work, not cost a lot and make is such that it gets street legal in that the wheels are covered with some sort of wheel well. I was going to go round tube but that is done a lot and I think for the shape of the truck the square look seemed to look a lot better. I came up with one idea drawn up on Cad and went with the idea. What you see here is just the skeleton of the frame and it will eventually have a back tail gate that will fold down. Gas tank is going back under the truck. Putting the tank inside the box would have taken up half of the truck. Round LED lights will go in the back corner plates.

Frame is bolted to frame and removable so that it can be painted.

I have actually enjoyed doing this metal work making all the shapes and dimensions all line up, I don't even do this for a living.

Now with the LOA swap and lift in general I can actually sit on my ass on the floor under the truck just below the rear seat and the under side of the truck does not touch my head. So much room now. Gas tank to be re-installed under the truck were it was and finally got the drag link and tie rods (1.25" DOM pipe) machined and threaded to accept the moog rod ends. I might have it out on the weekend. Drive way only.

Looks good, any plan to put expanded metal in the openings? Or is the plan to leave it open?

I am also jealous about you sitting under the truck.. That would really be nice.
