Own a 2000 silver xterra, modified it alot over the years to a point where the IFS and its capabilities flat lined my ability drive in this neck of the woods. Over the years it has had th typical mods, torsion bar cranked up, longer rear shackles, full skid plates underneath, OBA, inside jack mount, painted bars on top, CB radio, removed all crappy parts such as rear sway bars, plastic fenders, running boards, replaced stock wheels with cragar rims etc.. you know the usual stuff.

Right now its parked for the winter as it goes through a radical transformation. This will be:
- 35" tires
- 6.5" BDS springs
- 12" lift from stock
- radius arm set-up with high angle long control arms.
- mechanical lockers front and back, most likely a Spartan.
- rebuilt dana axles front(D30) and back(D35). Some of you may say what Dana 30 your wasting your time. Well actually a lot of jeep guys are running D30's and35's with no issue, even with monster lifts . Bye the time I am done I will be making the truck lighter. A Dana 30 is good axle for now, even with chrom axles.
- gas tank to be behind rear passenger seat. One less ting to hit with rocks.
- back half of truck cut away down to the frame so that a new tube style frame box can go in. spare tire in the back.
- relocated OBA
- hot water tank storage system for cleaning, tool kit etc..

It will be alot of work, should be done by last spring. All long lower control arms, drag link, tie rods etc.. will be custom made. Not doing the calmini thing.

In the end you should see a rock crawler/truggy look.

More pictures to come.:kewl:

OK. I Guess I won't wait any longer but here goes. Go the truck about 4 years ago, drove stock for one year then decided to mod it.

Set axle underneath and 35" tires to see the height. LOVE it. Right now the side mirrors come up to my neck. By the time its done it will be about 12" higher than stock.

Awesome! So are you going to cut off the rear and then weld the hatch onto the cab area to seal it up and then create a tube bed or are you going to leave it open and have a truck bed kinda thing going on?

I thought of that but I think once it is cut off I want the back wall to be flat with a window similar to a pu truck. More thought will be put into it when I get to that stage. Definitely will not be open due the rainy weather we get here.

I do have for sale some rear tail lights if anyone needs them.

When I removed the fuel tank I was overwhelmed at how much tubing and electrical wiring with sensors is under the truck just for the fuel system. That all has to be removed and re-used somehow.

I also noticed under the truck some items that not sure what purpose they serve. For example near the mufflers you will see a metal plate with a round rubber disk attached to it?? Purpose??? There are a few of them. I want to get rid of them. If it is not used it gets removed.

Probably a vibration dampener

The Birth of a monster....
This is gonna be a sweet build. I liked your OBA setup by the way. Simple, yet efficient. Is that front bumper you had on normally for an Xterra? looked a little larger and had a much larger stinger hoop than most of the usuals I see.

It was actually build for a jeep. I had to get the mounting adjusted, its served its purpose and then sold it back to another jeep guy last week. The new bumper that will go on will be a tube style.

I think when he said open, he meant an open tube style pickup bed vs a solid box style pickup bed. Not an open cab.

my bad. reading too fast. The back end will be replaced with a tube/sheet metal style frame. the spare tire will go in the back sitting in at an angle. Google truggy vehicle looks, this is where i will be starting but at the same time the framing will go over the rear tires to make it street legal. Most truggy's out here due to laws have to taken out by flatbed. I want to avoid this.

What's your reasoning for swapping out the rear axle with a dana 35?

Two reasons:

1. the rear axle gear ratio must match the front Dana axle. Nissan uses weird gear ratios. I could have kept it but would had to spend alot of money swapping out the gears.
2. There is no rear dif cover on my stock axle. With the dana35 I have more options to add in lockers etc..

Also met alot of guys running the D30 and 35 set-up with big trucks and their fine. If you treat your truck hard you will expect to break things. I got both axles for $100 so could no pass this up. Years from now will swap to a bigger axle when i have the money. The xterra is a light vehicle so D35 is more than sufficient.

Looks really good. I know you already have the D35, but have of thought of using a D44 out of an Isuzu Rodeo or Honda Passport? They use a tall gear but you still have great options for gears and lockers.

As I was pulling out the trim inside and was looking at the half moon shaped plastic tool cover you find under the carpet there is the words "XTERRA". I was going to cut this out and place it on the new rear body somewhere. Little thing like this will be added to the truck. Now that it is cut back can I still call it an Xterra? Might have to think of another name.
