X-Ram Cell Phone Mount

Since I didn't see it on this forum and I don't want to do a direct copy and paste from the newx.org I figured I'd make my own little write up of a pretty cool mod. If ya wanna call it that.

Since Cell Phones have pretty much become a part of driving with GPS functions, Hands free calling and so on. I really was looking for a cell phone mount/holder or whatever for my X. I looked at all the usual stuff in Walmart and local auto part stores. For the price I didn't think any of it was worth it.

So I was reading a post on thenewx one day and what was posted I thought would fit my needs. So here is what I did.

Here are the parts that I ordered. I used GPSCITY.com for everything. I did find a few other sites with these parts but they seemed to be the cheapest here.

X-Grip Cell Phone Cradle - https://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-universal-x-grip-phone-cradle-ram-hol-un7u.html
Ram Mount Flex Arm - https://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-dual-diamond-plate-flex-arm.html
Ram Mount Diamond Base with Snap Link Ball - https://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-plastic-diamond-base-with-snap-link-ball.html

Total Price for all the items was around $37 bucks I think. A little more expensive then the best Walmart Mount but well worth it in my opinion.

I mounted the arm and base just to the left of the 4x4 switch in my X. Best spot from what I've seen really. All depending on how you angle the arm the only issue I've had is when putting my keys in the ignition. It kinda gets in the way. But again its really not a big deal. I used well nuts in the location I described. I used Lowes for this purchase but any hardware store should have them.

This is the exact size I used. The Hillman Group 1/4"-20 x 3/4" Rubber Standard (SAE) Well Nut. Now....Here is where it can get tricky. I searched for like 20 mins for the right screws/bolts to use with the well nuts. I ended up getting 1/4"-20 x 1" 1/4 screw (With Rounded Head) Not what I wanted to use for it but it works. They are silver so I might just touch up with some black paint. Again just being anal here.

After I got the holes drilled and the well nuts were in place the rest is pretty easy. The Flex-Arm will just mount right to the well nuts and then at the other end you will use the Diamond Base to snap into the back of the X-Grip Cradle. Use some muscle for this. I assure you that it fits but man was it tough putting them together. The mounting hardware I used to attached the base and Flex-Arm together were just some nuts and bolts I also purchase at Lowes. I'm pretty sure I still have the package of what I used. The screws are just a hair to long but since they stick out on the back where you can't see them I wasn't worried about changing them for smaller ones.

Total price for the hardware might have been $3 or $4 bucks at the most.

This is how I usually have it tucked up close. Extended seems to be to far out. They do make different size Flex Arms but I think this is the best option.

Hope this is helpful.

Just a quick note on the Grip itself. I have a Galaxy S3 and it holds it no problem. If anyone has a Galaxy Note it may note fit but I can't verify that. The only issue that I really have is it you try and center the phone in the grip its right on Power Button and the Volume Up button. I move it down in the grip a little bit and its fine. No way it will fall out. My phone also has a Slim "Case-Mate" case on it as well.

Its very fast. Takes no time at all. Drilling the holes was the most. I had to use a few different bits to get the right size. That was about it.

You can really mount this where ever you want. I can see the advantages of having it up higher. I just kinda wanted to hide the mount myself. Keep it out of the way. And if I were to remove it for whatever reason I can easily hide those holes....

I like my phone to be up higher too. That's why I have the Bracketron mount.

But I'm considering the RAM flex arm option for my Nexus 7, specifically for using Backcountry Navigator.

Nice mod! I opted for an iBolt dock for my GS3. It works with or without a case and has a build in plug for charging and audio. Think I paid $35 on amazon.
