I'm looking for info on replacing leaf springs...not on my truck, but basically on my truck... (?)

My daycare provider's husband has a 2000 Frontier with a broken leaf and he wants me to replace them, he'd rather pay me than a professional mechanic. I figure it can't be that hard, seems very straightforward, but I don't know if I'm missing something. Anybody have any advice?

Jack up vehicle and place rear end on jack stands. Place jack and jack stand under axle. Try to find that nice height where the leaf spring does not have force either way. Remove Shackle. Unbolt U bolt. Unbolt front of leaf pack. Put in new leaf pack. Use new U bolts. (don't forget to re torque after a short trip and 100 miles, 1000 miles would not hurt either). When placing on new leaf spring. tighten to axle first then front leaf mount. Then shackle. Use the jack to adjust the height. After all bolts are in then torque down to specs. Also do one side at a time. You can also remove the wheel to be able to work easier. It is not hard to do and depending on your tools should no take to long. With it being that old I would start spraying everything with PB Blaster a week before hand and twice a day to make it easier.

I might be able to find the alcan instructions somewhere.

Thanks man, I appreciate it. That doesn't sound too bad at all. I'm sure New England rust will say otherwise, but there are ways of dealing with that.

Now I just have to put together a parts list and find my RockAuto discount code so he can buy everything.

One note if the old u bolts are to rusted to undo. You can cut them but be very careful as I've seen stuff go flying to to the forces. Like springs are pulling up still...

you will need new u-bolts, they are a one time thing, just plan on cutting them. After you have the new ones on, cut off the excess and use a cold chisel to mangle the threads to prevent the nuts from backing down. Other than that they are pretty straight forward. Air tools help, but when don't they.

Cool, will do. Yeah I don't have any access to air tools so this will be a gruntfest, but I'm used to that.

In addition to the good advice so far above, I'll add that the Fronty's leaves are on the other side of the axle from our X's.

IE: They are spring over IIRC.

If that year is spring under still, it will look like your X under there. The Fronty years and X years are off set, model-wise.

:D

I just did my AAL without air tools, easy peazy man. MAP gas helps too.

What's on your shopping list so far?

Noted, thanks man. I looked at the truck last week but I never actually noticed if it's SOA or SUA. I don't have the truck to check it out, either.

Yeah, I don't have any torches of any kind either. Still, no big deal, I'll make do just how I have in the past.

I hit a roadblock on my shopping list, the springs that RockAuto specifies for 2wd don't include bushings, they list a part number for them but they don't seem to carry them. I don't know if the springs for a 4wd will work. He does want the rear to be able to handle a little bit more weight, as he mostly just uses the truck to haul ish around in. The springs for 4wd include bushings.

Then I started looking up U-bolts, and RA carries like 5 different sizes, listed by diameter. Again, I'm not sure which to get. I'll have to check out the truck more closely the next time I'm over there and see what size U-bolts came OE on the truck. If all else fails I'll call RockAuto and see if somebody there can help me put the list together.

...Unless of course any of you fine folks have any insight into these issues ;)

What about your local napa?

Napa doesn't carry them, but I'm sure if they did they'd be easily double the price. Same goes for AutoZone, they don't carry them but anything they DO carry is far overpriced.

Also I've got a discount code for RockAuto that I'd like to use to help him keep costs down.

Yeah. Because the diameter of the U-bolt is going to be determined by the axle tube and the plate. The length may be variable. If you're not going to change the pack dimensions, then I'd suggest the stealership. Seems strange, I agree. However, when I did mine I got all 4 complete with nuts and washers for about $40.
