Could you guys spost some pics of your winches mounted please? I havent seen a how to and no one really shows them off. I am getting a Tabor 9k and I am looking to see how they fit in there. I have a shrockworks bumper so if you have one in there, thats great. thank you Dan

Dan they can only mount 2 ways.. Some mount to the front of the bumper, others mount to a plate in the bumper

Well I have the inside bottom plate on my bumper and the on the inside where my front plate would be on the outside. When I look at shrocks site I can tell where its mounted. I am just a little confused on where I mount this thing.

Ok so it doesnt have to level, the lower part of my bumper is angled down. I dont have a front plate I just wasnt sure if it has to be parallel with the opening.

Here are a couple pics of my winch install if it helps at all. It's just secured using the 4 bolts going into the bottom of the bumper

For those that know, this maybe a dumb question... BUT, do ALL winches have the same footprint? Meaning do all he bolts (I'm guessing bolts) align in the same pattern from Ramsey to Warn to Smitty to ect. ect. ect...?

Yea, everyone that I've seen has the 10"x4.5" mounting pattern, even the Warn Power Plant has it. I'd guess that's the standard

Outstanding!!! another problem solved. This site is growing on me. I changed the colors, now I can see stuff that I was guessing at, folks actually have likeable attitudes. Hmmm I think I stay. :lolz:

Aww shucks...HAHAHAHA. Life throws enough serious stuff at us already, it's up to you to throw some fun in there as well.

And where are you getting the additional smileies? :confuseded:
Think I found my answer, I'm on my old laptop w/ XP, don't think they're supported. I'll see when I use the newer one.

OK here's another AHAAA moment. I was on another site and came across a question about a mounting plate. It didn't dawn on me how I would actually mount a winch on Steena. I assumed everything came with it. So with this new information I looked at what WARN had for the Xterra...NOTHING.

What did you mount your [Warn] winch with because my Shrock didn't come with a plate? :uhhh:

With the shrockworks bumper, you do not need a plate because it is part of the bumper itself. The winch will mount inside the bumper feet forward.

Some winches you will want to clock the clutch lever, some it is not really needed to do it.

Of the 4 bolts holding the winch, the lower 2 also hold the fairlead, and the upper two are behind the front tag.

Another Winch/Bumper question for you Winch/Bumper techies.

Is inside the bumper the ONLY location that is available for the Xterra? If a tube bumper (like the ones for a Jeep) was made, can the winch sit on top exposed infront of the grill or MUST it go basically under the radiator?

Will the front frame horns and suspension support the weight of a winch sitting that far out front?

I ask because I found a guy who will bent DOM tubing for me up to 3" he says and I was thinking about making a round tube bumper for the front.

It should work, most people just have their winch tucked in as close to the frame as possible to limit the possibility of damage to a bumper or whatever. If you mount a winch up and away from the frame then some pulls could lead I bending of the bumper mounts or the frame where it is attached.

I'm just tossing around ideas. I would love to be able to purchase one from either MAX or RLC but the $'ers are just not there. So it's back to making my own, but would rather have it be all tubes to cut down on some of the weight.

I was looking at Xterra04's version but was unsure of how the winch cable came out. Looks like it might rub the bottom tube. Which caused me to think it would have to sit lower. Then thought about raising the winch on top. A never ending process until it's painted and mounted...lol

Building your own would be awesome. I don't have access to a tube bender and no experience doing it either though.

I know where to get tube benders just don't know which type. My dilema is not knowing the wall thickness for DOM tube bending. I want to use 3" for the main, 2" for the secondary and 1" for the support tubes. BUT, at what wall thicknessI should I get based on the bender (hydraulic/manual) while keeping the cost down for the material and still be able to add a winch and skids.

Using multiple sizes uf tubing adds a lot of time and complexity to a bumper. using 1 1/2 thicker walled tube can give the same strength with a simpler, and lighter design.

Building it all off of a universal winch plate would be where I would start. And putting it on top of the frame horns is the most convient location.

I typically use .120 wall DOM on the main stuff in 1-3/4" OD.
Some .090 in 1-5/8 on supports and 1" between .090 and .120.

I only use .134 if it's for a race car/truck to pass inspections as required.

The weight adds up very quickly, so you have to plan wisely.

Just finishing up a tube bumper for my sons pathy, and it's mostly out of .090 1-5/8 tube (no winch) and I'm surprised how heavy it's getting (maybe 80lbs)

So if I use 1.1/2" OD w/ .120 wall it should be strong enough to hold a winch? HF has a 12 ton bender for $99.

And I need to find that universal winch plate.

I did a little looking. Is there a true UNIVERSAL plate made to fit any brand of winch?

or

Did you mean each brand has it's own version of a universal plate? So I kinda have to know what brand I plan to get and get that plate first?

Yanno somewhere I think I asked this question before. IIRC this was the same answer. DUH!!!
AND..if it's universal, that means it can be made by anyone... even me...lol. I'm guessing 3/16" again.

My winch sits up high like you are talking about. Its removed right now for maintenance, but you can see where it goes. I have the grill out too, but it fits in ther just fine.
