What maintenance to perform after hard drive?

Hi all,

New to this site. I just completed a 3500 mile trip hauling a loaded down U-haul trailer. This trip took me from Western Washington State to South Georgia through mountain passes and countless steep grades. I was worried the whole time that my 2005 stock Xterra S was going to drop its transmission but she made it. I am now wondering if I need to have someone check it out. Maybe the transmission oil needs changing? I changed the motor oil before I left and added a quart midway through the trip. It seems to be driving just fine but I need this vehicle to last awhile longer so I need to know if there are things I need to be concerned about after such a grueling drive. Any suggestions?

I would change the transmission fluid, especially if you have never done so before. The recommended interval is every 30,000 miles. Read your owners manual and see what all service intervals you are behind on like the differentials and t-case fluid as well.

I would also change the engine oil and filter as the added heat from towing will have sped up the breakdown of the oil.

Also, if you still have the factory radiator, please change it ASAP before it fails and kills your transmission. It's not an if, it's a when with the 2005-2011 Xterra, Frontier and Pathfinders.

That is about what I thought needed to be done. I had the radiator conversion done when I had the transmission fluid changed at around 70k miles. I will have it and the engine oil changed again soon. Thanks for the advice.

Glad to help! Everyone here wants to keep these things on the road for as long as possible.

What is "the radiator conversion"? Replaced with a new radiator? Transmission cooler bypass? Something else?
