Figured I'd try it the new photo upload posting thing. Not bad, even I can do it. (Bit of a shock coming by today and everything looks different.)

Replaced both seized rear calipers, (tired of fighting with the 12yo slide pins), rotors, pads, all 4 hoses, and new parking brake hardware since it was all taken apart. Only thing not original with 170k was the rear pads. Probably gonna replace the steel line running above the diff soon. It's corroded pretty bad.

No ABS issues bleeding and topping up the fluid. Lucky I guess.

Took the picture before finishing up the hoses, but I know that doesn't bother anybody here. One of the hose bracket bolts broke so it'll need drilling out later. For now it's temporary secured the standard way.

Looks good. I've gotta do my brakes soon. Front pads are OK but want new rotors (209k on originals) and the rear needs Raybestos EHT and rotors.

Jesus man! I've replaced everything but the calipers 2X. I've only got 133k.....

To be fair though, I replaced everything because I couldn't get them to stop squeaking.... and I had a seized E brake line... then I warped the rotors (Steel Bender will do that).... and I tow.... so..... nevermind.

RIght? I replace brake parts like it's going out of style. Also, the designer of the 2nd gen brakes needs to be drawn and quartered. That STUPID RUBBER BOOT ON THE CALIPER PINS IS ufckING STUPID! I left them out the last time I did the brakes on the X. I couldn't get the lower pins out and had to replace the calipers.

I dunno? I've always been extremely easy on brake parts. My Dad is the same way. It's not like we drive gently either, but we use the transmission to do most of the hold back. Years of heavy farm towing I guess?

Dad bought a Cavalier new in 1989. In 1994 he put front pads on it. Not sure of the mileage but his daily commute was just under 40 miles round trip.

In 2004ish, when it was my car with around 200k on the clock, the friction material finally fell off the backing plates, causing me to almost wreck in town. We had the receipt in the glove box and Advance Auto actually warrantied the pads for it.

I put AC Delco pads on the back of the X when I bought it cause they were almost shot. Almost two years later the guy at the tire shop made a comment about my new brakes when I had the 285s put on. He acted like he didn't believe me when I said they'd been on that long already.

*shrug*

Bought a 100ft-lb torque stick for Odo . In reality it's probably around 95ft-lb's , I'm just not sure if I want to carry the Ingersol Rand or buy a smaller Milwaukee brand to carry offroad .

Remember me... 4.10's and 4 lo... engine braking...... Towing I'm always using the trans for that..... my brakes got trashed from wheeling.(example) Steel Bender.... my brakes were gone right before the drop.... as is wouldn't stop my truck.... a very short while later.... a river crossing..... super hot rotors and a cold water bath. And like I said, I replaced parts because of brake squeal.

I didn't think about this... I just put on new brakes (pads/rotors) Saturday and was hoping to go offroading (although on a fairly tame trail) this weekend. In between I'll only be putting maybe 100 miles on the brakes at most. Should I hold off taking it off pavement? Or just try to go really easy on it and stay out of the puddles when possible?

I'm a recent new owner of a rig with no paper trail of maintenance done, it was a one owner, lady said she had it serviced but didnt know what exactly so I'm doing it all. Just did timing belt (it had a gates on it, not nissan...was it replaced already?), tensioner, c20210319_185607.jpgam seals, crank seal, water pump, thermostat, new belts. Gotta order oil/transmission fluid and filters, and differential oil today. Then hopefully I can order fun stuff like BL or SL.

And this weekend was the front end.

IMG_20210320_181002_01.jpg

Both sides: upper and lower ball joints, axles, bearings, and calipers/hoses. Rotors and pads were pretty recent and good enough to keep, but those damn slide pins...

Leaky valve covers and power steering hoses are up next week. Shocks are getting overdue too.

Sil Glide and a new set of rubbers...

You just have to make sure you put the pin that has the sleeve on it in the right place.... but you both know that....so....

What's the issue?
The first time I did the brakes on the truck I had to replace both front calipers because the lower pins were seized in place and wouldn't budge. I put them back together without the rubber on the lower pin.

Yup, sounds about right. Fancy special grease just for the pins, make sure the rubber is in place correctly, and.... another salty winter does what it always does.

I'm not really upset about it. Those calipers did last a long time. On the good news end I looked up the replacement steel line above the diff. For $10 I'll do both sides. And start looking up all the rest. I had a corroded steel line burst on me once. Not something I want happening again. All new hoses already, all new steel tubing soon. Waaaay cheaper than finding out the hard way when the salt is winning.

Did an oil change today and finally painted the radiator skid. The rest of the skids got all rusty so they’re gonna need more effort and a new scour pad for the grinder.

Buttoned up some driving lights using a factory push button switch and latching relay. It was a fun little diversion.

MEmKWDr.jpg

I also retrofitted the relay box with two new relay sockets. One is a spare that I’ve pre-wires for future accessories, and the Hella relay is for the driving lights. The latching relay is under the dash and is being used as a driver for the relay under the hood.

Well......................................after looking at the side view [pic1] and thinking about the amount of air it might catch under the overbite of the hood and remembering what my dad's car looked like when his hood lifted at near 70mph I decided to go with " plan B" and take a dremel and a sawzall to the front facia and the secondary grill attachment thingy underneath and give Odo his second facial in as many day's . I did brake two of the bottom clip's off the facia grill so that need's to be addressed with a couple self-tapping screw's/zip tie's . Also hit it with some satin rattle can from ACE .20210329_165827.jpg20210330_191644.jpg

Decided I wanted to use the rivnut tool I bought in case I needed it for the roof, then missed the return window on. I took out the flimsy plastic d-ring and put a rivnut in its place so I can bolt on a proper d-ring.

Also sprayed some spray paint in a plastic bag and used a brush to dab some on the molle panel where I’d chipped it off, as well as on the bolts and exposed parts of the bracket to make them blend in a little better. Turned out nice.
