You paid $147 for four bolts and had them install it? Dude, that's not even a 10 minute job out on the trail in the dirt.

It's probably time you started learning how to fix your own stuff, especially if you want to wheel it.

A) I've been fixing cars since '65
B) Was on a racing team pit crew from '68-70
C) Off-roading/wheeling since '78

How long have you been doing this?

I happen to work smarter, not harder. Fixing it in the dirt, on a trail, without 4 bolts or nuts, and then having someone check it all out..... well worth the $147.
And I bet you don't even carry the proper 4 bolts and nuts with you. ;)

Peace....

Born in 67', Working on cars since my first 68' Chevy 4 speed farm truck at 16, And yes actually I do carry spare bolts and Nuts of practically every single size on the rig, along with many many other spare parts like fluids, belts, CV's, sensors, and all the other little pieces that can leave you stranded, along with the full tool kit to pull it off..... It's why my rig weights in at 5900 lbs.

Oh, I'm good. :)

Although a deep breath would mean inhaling a lot of smoke from the wildfires around the state. :D

Semi-related side thought: I'm planning on swapping out my front driveshaft bolts for Allen head bolts so I don't have to continually deal with the 14mm wrenches slipping or the bolts spinning because they don't capture against the flange like they should.

^ Man I wouldn't, Nothin' is worse than a dirt filled Allen head that you accidentally strip out.

Me: thinking of the time when I nearly stripped out the Front diff fill plug for that very reason.

But as the mantra goes... your rig.... LOL

I'm quite sure my rig is full of things others wouldn't do.

I've considered that, but a few seconds with a small screw driver will dig the dirt out. My Cherokee had allen head bolts on the drive shafts and while it was still more annoying than the u-bolt type straps, I never had one strip out on me. Most of my front drive shaft bolts have rounded off flats from my wrench slipping off them while working with them. If the companion flange would capture them like it's supposed to, it would be a non-issue, but it's eventually going to end with cutting one out because the head is too far gone to get on with pliers or any other tool.

I can get 12.9 grade allen head screws in the proper thread so I can reuse the factory flange nuts. I can add a washer under the head of the bolt if I feel like that will be an issue too, but I don't think the contact patch is any less with the allen than the hex head bolt since they are slightly undercut around the flats and only have a circular contact patch about the diameter of the width across the flats of the bolt head now.

I carry a set of Dental pick's in my guitar tool box . There's 3-4 different style's/angle's/length's , I think they would get the dirt out pretty easy .....

I did an oil change today and a transmission drain/fill (planning on doing two more after 2,000 miles each).

I measured almost exactly a gallon of ATF out, so I put a gallon back in. My son and I drove around, dropped off used oil, and left it running to check levels when we got back. It was over a quart low. I'm super confused, because the level was good before I did anything. Oh well, added a quart. As I finish, I realize I'm an idiot... I'm in the driveway on an uphill pitch. Luckily I had the correct size rubber tubing to slide down into the dipstick hole and hook up to the pump to pump a quart back out. All good now.

Been there , done that. Lol The paved road in front of the house is a slight hill and the 25ft of driveway is 2.5 times the grade of the road . It's like a double indemnity clause .

Did the transfer case and front diff today. I’m at 74k and clearly the oil was the only fluid ever changed. The plug for the front diff had a ton of goop on it. Next is coolant, power steering, and brake fluid and then everything will be fresh.

Replaced the crankshaft sensor, and both passenger side O2 sensors (did drivers side like a year ago)

New and old. Added an O-ring Since I bought 2 for the cam sensors but the new ones came with it already.

Also ordered a spare set of all 3 position sensors from rockauto.

I be at 147K.. So Not sure when any will fail.. But carry code Reader in second glove Box.

Driver side sensor will be creative To remove, But did have Sockets & Adapters in socket.. just in case. Really need a drawing of all three's location..So as not to hunt them down.. To keep with sensor.

Like TerryD said.. cheap Vs Offroad tow bill. Since lots of Towing hate going on gravel roads.

Drove to the grocery store, felt good after piloting the wife’s x1 the last couple of months.

Did some preliminary work for battery cable/alternator upgrades and hard mount battery charger. Thanks to @RM975 for the posting about these terminals, they’re pretty sweet.

Drive it to Roanoke today. So far so good.

That's about 150 miles on the new case. It's rained most of today but hopefully I'll check it for leaks tomorrow and see if that rear seal dried up or if I'm going to have to replace it.

I guess the SMART thing to do before I buy sensor's would be to buy a good code reader " thing-a-ma-jiggy " I don't need one with a built in GPS , I know the sun rise's in the East but also don't want a bottom of the rung POS ; any suggestion's are appreciated. Thanx

Yup. Anything with the ELM327 should work. Paid $20 CAD (so like $0.05 USD at the moment...) for mine. If you have an Apple garbage, you might need to get one that supports Wifi as not all of the Bluetooth ones work, but Android is a lot more forgiving.

I had an extra storage divider box sittin in basement so I thought I'd make a trip/offroad kit for Odo and since I tend to buy thing's in bulk it made sense to me. I'm sure some would say overkill but I know the ON-road cost of getting a tow , I'd hate to see what an off-road tow would cost :eek::(20200824_101906.jpg

2 Gauge battery ground cable. Took about an hour, but probably would have been 30 minutes if I took the battery out for better access at the beginning, and didn’t drop the bolt that connects the cable to the block into the steering rack area.

Do leaf springs just snap?! Is this because I added 2" with the shackles? Just old or what? I just missed out on a set of super low mileage leaves too, my luck.

OME springs are good and you can tailor the ride height with the adjustable shackles.
With 2"s of lift thru the coilovers and rear shackles/5100s, what would you get the spring rate at? Fully loaded I average I'm guessing about 150-200lbs. Will eventually get a maxgear rear with tire carrier, can trays, etc.

With the lift I have would I be buying regular leaves or the ones stating lift numbers comparable to what I have? It's 3a, I dunno if that made sense.

Well, you can get the standard load and adjust the shackles to get the height you want. Then later when you need it, add the extra leaf for the added capacity.

But I think @TheCrabby1 is happy with how his rides on the heavy leafs. I had the heavy leafs on my Cherokee and was happy with how it rode and drove.

It was great offroad and better then I thought it would be on the street. They are a little more stiffer when you hit bigger bump's [ mainly on over passe's going from asphalt to concrete , those edge's you feel in everything including a Benz ] but this will be lessened when the Hardcore bumper goes on the back . Consistently driving 10-20 mph over the speed limit is probably a bigger part of it :D I'm also playing around with the air pressure , riding with 38 lb's now , will jump that to 44 next week and see how that feel's just think the recommended 51 seem's stiff on a non-Lt 265/75/16 .

Thanks, I'll check the site. I now have 3 vehicles and all of them need some sort of work and they could all use some tlc.. I'm in search mode for a place to live outside of the emission nightmares and with a covered spot to wrench. I've enjoyed living close to the workplace but I'm willing to drive again I guess.. Got to get away from Denver.
