Weird Noise

My X seems to make a flute noise when I start it during cold temperatures. It fluctuates with rpm’s when the engine is cold but mainly does it around 1500-1700rpm. I’m using a genuine Nissan filter so that gets rid of the oil filter whine problem. Any suggestions on what this is? Maybe a shot bearing in one of the pulleys?

Check the pulleys and belt first. Eliminate those as a potential issue. Then check rotating bearings and bushings like the alternator and such.

You could. Definitely a good way to get a tactile sense of the pulleys. If the alternator doesn’t move freely, you’ll know the bushing is bad. But I use a small metal rod that I put up next to the component in question, and put the other end up next to my ear. You can hear a lot.

Wow that’s a great idea.. it’s just a plain metal rod, or like a long screwdriver ?

Ok well that’s reassuring. Im definitely keeping my ears peeled for the timing chain…because OCD lol.. I just recently replaced the clutch and fan with new OEM parts.
Ok, you should be well clear of the timing shoe issues of the early 2nd Gen. I would start with the pulleys and the clutch fan idler.
